    With still no re-opening date and all this (no doubt preplanned) night / weekend work coming up, I almost suspect they are trying to get the line electrified earlier than planned (sacrificing the reopening date), possible because of the state election in March.

    That could be a possibility, but I would substitute the words "with lateness measured in weeks instead of months" where you've written "earlier than planned."

    We know that not all of the upcoming night works affecting the Belair line (i.e. the Adelaide-Goodwood part of things) are pre-planned, the department has acknowledged that some of the gantries have been placed incorrectly and need an extra closure to be relocated.

    I heard something on the radio today about it being confirmed the line would not re-open in September - as if that wasn't already obvious.  Didn't hear anything about when it would be reopening, just that it won't be yet.

    Does anybody have any details on the "train protection system" the website says has been installed on the Seaford (formerly Noarlunga) line? Is it TPWS? PZB? KVB? ATC? ATP?

    Some good news I bring

    Electrification work from Lonsdale to Brighton looks almost fully complete now all the wires appear to be installed now just looks like there are a few minor touch ups before the crew move onto the next section of the line to install wiring too.

    Electrification works are definitely going at a more rapid pace now. Seems to me that do indeed want the electric trains in service before March

    Contact wire now in place on droppers from Brighton on both tracks to Columbia Cres meeting the Noarlunga-Lonsdale stretch. Some photos from today below. Not bad work, 10 km route in  one week! Also there has been rapid progress on the Marion Underpass over the last two weeks.  Now for the signalling!  Signal cable work this afternoon at Goodwood and Victoria Ave.

    62430: Thank-you for those pics.  So that's Colombia Cres. with the finished product.  I wonder if that's worse or better than the residents were expecting?  The second photo looks like the dreaded catenary tensioning structure.  You can see these all over Melbourne but they're certainly much heavier construction here than those 25,000vac ones in the picture.

    It's good to hear that they're flying along with it now anyway -

    I posted that because yesterday morning he specifically said on radio that it was highly unlikely the line would be reopen this month and now after he said that he is saying the line will reopen this month still.

    Maybe he sent an email to the department and got the same canned response that they issue every time somebody asks when the trains are resuming on the DPTISA Facebook page, including today...



    Does anybody know what a "communter" is?

    I laughed when I saw that but in the end the person in charge of the DPTI Facebook page can't really do anymore than that since they are probably just as clueless about the situation as everyone else

    The best thing about that canned response is that it can apply to anything (no specific reference to any project) and doesn't need to be changed according to time.

    It's so good that all government units should use it, just think of the possibilities...

    Interestingly the accompanying photo from Cove Road is at least two weeks old. By last week earth, return and cantenary wires had been run out and yesterday the contact wires were in place.

    What is difficult to establish is the scope of the signalling work under the contract with Invensys.  The press release http://www.invensys.com/en/media/article/949?title=Invensys%20Rail%20Wins%20Adelaide%20Re-signalling%20Project refers to a 24 month resignalling project.  The work done so far has involved provision of new lineside cabinets with WestraceII equipment, of new LED signal heads, replacement of track circuits with wheel detectors, and new signal and comms cabling, which appears to be complete replacement of the lineside signalling infrastructure.  Where then are the problems?

    DPTI just posted this on their Facebook page:

    Diesel rail services on the Noarlunga line will regrettably be unable to resume in September. DPTI still expect to be in a position to return services before the end of the year and are still on track to deliver electric rail services from Seaford from early next year. From October 1st, substitute buses will run free of charge until the Noarlunga line services resume. We appreciate your patience.

    At least the bustitutes will be free....

    ...The Minister advised David Bevan off-air this afternoon that the service was unlikely to be restored before the end of November...

    So in the space of a day DPTI and the Minister have gone from 'opening we think within 12 days' to 'maybe opening within the next 50 to 60 days, we hope'... Geez guys get some control over the situation.

    No wonder the incoming FEDs are withdrawing funds from urban rail projects. It is quite obvious the State government doesn't think it important. Another 60 days covered by a lamebrain excuse.

    Just let them suffer the buses for a few more months; not days!!!!

    The signalling worked when the rails were put back. What's stopping it now? A mismanaged contract to up grade it?

    As for the electrification down to (or is that down from) Brighton, that's not finished either. Lots of work this afternoon but cantilevers still held up with rope, wires being pulled in, people all over it. Signal heads outside the line of the electrification masts where their sighting will be compromised.

    What a stuff up!

    At least the Goodwood underpass was finished on time even if signalling, another contractor, has messed that up.

    While I am at it, 'the free substitute bus services will be paid for by the taxpayer'... Why?! Get the contractor to pay for the free trips, they are the cause of the delay, not the rest of us.

    And 'we're not ruling out applying penalties to the contractor' WTF?! Rule such penalties in AND APPLY THEM NOW!!

    He's always been a bit of a dunce, but I suspect this is just him repeating what he was told.

    But that's no excuse for losing control of the whole thing and making us foot the bill instead of withholding payments to contractors to cover the impact. It's a typical SA construction fuster cluck from start to finish.

    Agree x2. Any future contracts with the companies involved should be fed through the shredder as well, and legislation passed to screw them over even further if they dare try and challenge it in court.
