GSR have an arrangement with several car rental companies around Australia, any surplus space on the motor rail is bought by them and their cars are moved/returned by GSR.
In place on the Ghan and IP as well.
GSR have always done "un-accompanied" motorail.
I had the work ute sent to Perth and back a few years ago, GSR's price was a third of what the trucking companies wanted for the same thing!
Was also cheaper than freighting the job materials over and hiring a car over there.
(Interesting note .... the trucking companies said that the vehicle had to be 'empty' whilst GSR said as long as the vehicle is not overloaded and they can see out the mirrors!)

For those who don't realise, Ghan and IP carriages come from the same pool, the side 'nameplates' are interchangable
Only 12 on the Christmas Overdue? Anyone remember the days it had to be split to fit in at Spencer Street and had two locos on the front?
I can remember (as a youngling) the "Melbourne Express" having 2 divisions both extending past the Morphett St bridge at the old Adelaide Railway Station, with two 900's or two 930's at the noisy end
