Just out of interest, what route takes you from Echuca to Melbourne via Cressy without a change of direction?
"duttonbay"
I wasn't sure about that junction, but threw it in anyway, safe in the knowledge that it would be queried if I was wrong.

There's been some excellent guesses, but the answer is not Korong Vale, Hamilton or Kilmore, or the previously guessed Echuca and Daylesford.

I too am not sure about Cressy, but you did forget my personal favourite: Echuca to Melbourne without a change of direction via Castlemaine, Avoca, Horsham, Balmoral, Koroit and Geelong.

Balmoral also offers an even more convoluted route from Echuca to Melbourne without changing direction. Echuca via Castlemaine-Maryborough, then Ballarat-Geelong, Koroit, Hamilton, Balmoral, Horsham and onwards to Melbourne through Ballarat (again). I didn't actually specify that each location can only be passed once, so I shall add that to the question.

We are looking for a station from which a (theoretical) Melbourne-bound train could travel to the big smoke via multiple routes, without a change of direction.
No location can be passed through more than once.

Maryborough?

Even today, there are 3 viable options to get to Melbourne that don't require reversing:
1. Direct via Bacchus Marsh
2. via Meredith
3. Standard Gauge route via Avoca, Ararat, Cressy and North Shore.

If travelling from Melbourne, a train reached this station with an electric staff. Beyond, on either of the lines, the driver would have a train staff (or ticket).

This one is probably a bit too obvious to be the correct answer, but the question has to be asked...

Are we looking for Ballarat?

Maroona

None of Jeparit, Ballarat or Maroona.

The location is no longer a junction, and indeed is, to the best of my knowledge, no longer an "official" location. But trains still trundle past...

Without any confidence at all, I shall say Lubeck.

This station shares its name with a famous (or perhaps infamous) Australian singer.

Barnes?  (I make that guess with the caveat that the definition of "singer" here is in its broadest terms.)

I defer to Valvegear and withdraw my guess, as I was beaten by five minutes.
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

The answer is of course Barnes. It took a while, but Valvegear has the staff.

Thanks duttonbay ( jeez I was close with Echuca!); here's a quickie.

The name of this place has at least two different meanings.
