1. A closed terminus.
2. Closed for more than 30 years. At the end of a short line. Both had a short life.
3. The section from the penultimate station to the terminus was quite steep (1-in-30). This, plus a caterpillar (millipedes?) plague on the rails, was given as the cause of the late arrival of the official train at the opening.

Thanks, kitchgp.

We have now the terminus of a closed line - once the terminus of a short line, it became the terminus of a much longer line.

Not Port Albert, hbedriver, but I think you have the right idea, albeit in reverse.

We are looking for a terminus that was once the terminus of a short line, it became the terminus of a much longer line.  Port Albert was originally the terminus of a long line that became the terminus of a short line.

Further clue: this location never saw a regular passenger service, although it did see one or two tour specials.

Deniliquin. Originally the terminus of the Deniliquin and Moama Railway Company rail line, and later the terminus of a line right through from Melbourne.
As for tour specials, 707 Operations conducted a number of 3 day/2 night tours there in my time with the group.

Not Deniliquin nor Yelta.

And both lines had regular passenger services at one time, which rules them out.

(Incidentally, I went to Deni with a most enjoyable A.R.E. tour run by D.E.R.M.P.A.V. a few years ago.  The passenger platform road had been lifted by that time, but we received permission by radio to proceed to the goods platform, after the driver had expressed concern that the whole yard might have been booked out.  The decision had already been made to lift the yard, with a retirement village to be built on the site, and there was speculation that our tour could well be the last passenger working into Deni yard proper.  I don't know whether that turned out to be the case, but it must have been one of the last.)

Only one guess so far has been on the right line.

No takers?

We are looking for the terminus of a short line, now closed, that became the terminus of a much longer line owing to the abolition of a junction.  The terminus did not at any stage see a regular passenger service, but saw a couple of tour specials.

It is not:

Katamatite
Moulamein
Heathcote
Mount Gambier
Port Albert
Deniliquin
Yelta.
