And don’t forget that sparks used to have headboards showing Healesville, Mornington, Stony Point, Warburton, and Healesville/Warburton!

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, Little River, Bacchus Marsh and Riddells Creek are all in Zone 2, but there is no debate that they are country stations.

As for my guess, is it Riddells Creek? I believe it was renamed Riddell at one point in the early 20th century before reverting to its current name in the 1970s.

I agree with what you say, Gman_86; but it is apparent that the debate, while interesting, has proved to be something of a distraction, as (while your guess is an excellent one) the answer to the teaser was determined by duttonbay four posts ago to be Portland (the one that became North Portland for a time and was ruined by some architecturally insensitive development in the 60s).

So, a new teaser:

We are looking for a siding that was open between the first decade of the 20th century and the late 1950s and was operated by a concern of wood and general produce merchants.

Maffescioni's Siding is absolutely correct, kitchgp, and the road is yours.

The siding was part of B. Maffescioni & Co., wood and general produce merchants.  If you google it, you can find a photograph, c. 1920, of two Maffescioni brothers at the siding in a buggy, drawn by a horse, Ginger, which used to take the Maffescioni children to school.

Thanks.

1. A short branch line open for more than 40 years and closed more than 40 years ago.

PS: The zone listings above were about the lines, not the stations. Given the Melbourne forum is for Zone 1 & 2, Healesville and Warburton should perhaps be considered Regional. If they still existed today they may be operated outright by V/Line Sprinters, rather than Sprinters leased to Metro Trains, à la Stony Point.

I'll say the Crib Point Naval Base spur.  Given the debate we've had on the topic, I'm asserting it counts as regional.
