BY the way if OPAL can be like the Hong Kong system it will be great and as said the fare structure will have to havesome sort of overhaul.  There will be a lot of pain there.

But if it does, it will be worth it.

Just on the poles themselves, how would they 'fit' on the readers onto them? The top of the poles are completely rounded off and I can't see how they're going to attach anything to them.

In Hong Kong there is a surface about 4 times the size of a credit card.  Your card is just placed near or on it.  You don't have to take it out of your wallet.

I have not looked closly at the the changes to see but there may be another mode to come?
Someone may know more?

Bankstown Line:
*5 (+/-1) poles were installed at Punchbowl.

*2 at Erskinville

*3 at Dulwich Hill

*2 or 3? at Canterbury

*3+1 wearing a hat at Blemore

*2 at Wiley Park

*2 at Hurlstone Park

Yagoona, Lakemba, Marrickville, St Peters still do not have them. As for the other Bankstown Line stations, I don't know.

For other stations check http://www.busaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=66085&p=795082#p795082 too.

Here, it appears they are attached to the 'hood' which houses the reader.

And just to add onto Airvan99's post, the ones on poles in HK are only found at Light Rail Stations, whereas all Train stations have ticket barriers and are like this instead:

On pre-existing ticket barriers, validator and screen are separate.

All newer stations, perhaps the S/NWRL link stations will have ticket barriers with a similar 'all in one validator and screen' solution? Or did they already order the existing barriers like what they did for Padstow?

What?  Go Card is awesome, it's just overpriced.  That's not the fault of the technology.

Besides the screens there are new gates that cannot be pushed open and the keyboard control technology is to be replaced with touch screen technology. These changes are to be rolled out at all stations and are not directly Opal related.

I use the gates at Wynyard everyday and have seen the same guy pushing the gate aside for almost the past year. Noticed as soon as they installed the LCD screens on top this dude nearly popped a tendon trying to push the gate open for the first time. I damn near wet my pants watching!

They can be nasty too. Watched someone else try to force through when the gate was open from the person in front and it closed with such force he got one leg stuck on each side. Lucky for him, his nads were just above the pinch point otherwise I would have had to call the Ambo's on speed dial and he would have been talking like Mickey Mouse!

Aaah, it's good to be back...been lurking in the shadows for a bit but had to add my 2c to this one.  Laughing

Excellent. It is all going according to plan.

Btw, is it possible to still climb over the gate? I saw one young male help a female companion essentially climb over the faregate at Macquarie Uni. Perhaps our dedicated Opal barriers (as opposed to the halfway-point frankenbarriers) could imitate the London ones?

If so, we will have one thing to laugh about (Tcard aside).

Meanwhile, VIC and QLD will laugh at everything else.

Vic is ahead of NSW on transport and present trends look like they are extending, rather than going the other way.  The only criterion NSW performs better on is journey to work.

QLD, WA and SA are all significantly behind NSW on PT use per capita and journey to work but all have far superior ticketing systems than NSW, which is one of the worst in the developed world.  Once AKL and WLG fix their systems, I won't be aware of any worse system in the developed world.
