Scott, the four motor cars you've noted have been attached to the AK Cars for another run around the Sydney suburbs this week.

Was (or is) their really anything wrong with these sets, or just that the "gummit" wants all trains air conditioned (1), and/or that the people believe that non air conditioned trains are "sub standard" so to speak

1. Now I wonder "when" the last of the S Sets will be operate? Nuh, surely it would not be near the end of year! Laughing

Generally, these days, Rollingstock has a life cycle of some 30 to 35 years.

48 sets (192 cars) have been selected for retention until 2017.

You answered your own question. In providing a modern commuter service that will attract new customers out of their comfortable air conditioned luxury cars, yes, non-air-conditioned stock is totally unacceptable. A minority might have some perverse s&m desire to live in painful circumstances but most normal people do not.

If poor travel conditions are so attractive why don't more commuters try walking to work in winter bare footed. In my view S sets should have incorporated A/C from inception. If V sets had it then it would have been possible for S sets to have it also

Yes they could have (especially the later batches), but I think it was a cost saving measure from the government of the time. Lucky CityRail put aircon into the remaining K Sets without it in the late '90s otherwise they'd probably also be on the chopping block now.

I'd dispute that statement. It would appear as if the policy has changed - rather than having sets stored at Enfield out of sight out of mind, they're better off being stored with the operational fleet to better allow them to cycle through the operational sets. Of course, this is a completely uneducated guess, but it would stand to reason.

I concur. It would mean ease of getting them back into operational service in an emergency (without having to send a crew to Enfield, get them to cut in, tell the box they're ready, get the box to set a road, etc - correct me if I'm wrong here).

Not sure of the relevancy to S Sets being scrapped. I think it'd be more appropriate in the General Observations thread?
