west kalgoorlie is mostly 2 driver operations with the occasional box job to leonora. west merredin is basically driver only operations with box jobs to kalgoorlie. albany is all local working but i dont know if they are doo or 2 driver, no box jobs. picton(bunbury) is all doo and no box jobs. narngulu is mostly 2 driver ops with box jobs to perenjori and karara on iron ore trains. kwinana is doo and no box jobs. collie is 2 driver with box jobs to kwinana on the coal trains. there is a little bit of car driving in each depot.

Not that any QRN/Aurizon/Interail jobs are currently being offered today for Hunter Valley coal, but do not come here if you do not like doing lots of motor vehicle driving. We do stacks of it, often almost as much time in a shift in cars as we're driving the trains. And the company does little or nothing to address it (apart from badgering us to hand over our drivers licenses so the company can make colour photocopies to keep in a folder - to which I've refused).

I don't know anything about what the QRN/Aurizon/ARG jobs in WA are like. We have had one guy leave here to go to a QRN job for the iron ore haulage in south-west WA.

I think what we're seeing is a lot of disgruntled drivers leaving the Pilbara (as expected) and seeking work in NSW, QLD, etc. I think there's been a lot of interest in positions where I work to the point that planned trainee positions have been cancelled or scaled back and the nod being given to these guys.

It's very interesting to see the flip-side of pilbara working, which goes to show that no method of working suits everyone. Just like I didn't want to do relays any more when I actually had a functional relationship and my kids lived with me, other people do not like FIFO and the high dollars are not necessarily worth what it looks like on paper when all the factors are considered. FIFO means other things beside fly-in/fly-out as most people would know. Cool

I guess this is a natural cycle too with rail all over Australia becoming more favourable for transport again, so whereas the last 10+ years saw people go north-west to change the $$$, now people are getting attracted to other areas for various combo's of $$$, lifestyle, location, etc. as opportunities for good long term job security emerge out of the back end of the transition from government rail freight to private operators.

Don't hold you breath for Jilalan jobs the vacancies are mainly in the outer depots (Coppabella and Bluff). Just recently they were still asking Jilalan drivers to permanently transfer to Coppabella.

Awww come on Rio has the best job prospects and has a bright future ahead with only requirements for 150 Autohaul "recovery drivers" (of which there will be plenty of recovery) run their railway this time next year and a fully contractual workforce! Rolling Eyes lol Theres been a few apply at Aurizon but seems to be that they are failing the Psyc tests. It's interesting they now are putting the remuneration up on the adverts as that was the main thing people were asking for at their Pilbara info sessions late last year.

Hey Wal,

Do you know any more specifics of the workings out of Kwinana? Are those guys running the Iron Ore out of Merredin? and what other workings are they do?

Any info appreciated.

Forrestfield do the iron ore out of Kwinana.kwinana do the bauxite, alumina and caustic trains on the south west main. I think Brunswick is as far as they go by train and back to Kwinana by car when relieved by the collie crew.

Thanks Wal,

Appreciate the info, sounds like Forrestfield may be the better depot for a variety of work? Rather than just being stuck on the one line for 150 odd kms!

I guess there is the expenses option of going to other depots to learn and add variety?

1 more Q, is Kwinana mostly D.O.O? or 2 man?

Cheers,

With the new Whitehaven contract in the Hunter Valley, they company will be getting desperate for more crews in Newcastle (and maybe in the Upper Hunter too if they're smart and put a depot there somewhere) later this year, so keep an eye out.

Our EA is up for negotiation this year too, so if it's a bad deal, people will walk away.

Been talking to a mate up in Newcastle who has contacts in Aurizon says with some confidence that there will be about 20 jobs coming up in September, not sure if any will be trainees, but he's hopeful.

The main reason the company will hire around then is purely to provide an intake of people new to the industry from lower-paying jobs who will look at the proposed new EA the company wants and the majority will immediately vote yes for it without a care in the world purely based on the bottom-line (ie. the annual aggregate salary), also because those people will be fresh into their probationary employment phase and they will be unwilling to rise up against mgmt for fear of losing their new jobs.

Perhaps that's too cynical a view but anyone with any nous will see the company is keen to advantage it's position for EA any way it can given the high-stakes nature of the Whitehaven contract and planned expansion of existing contracts in the Hunter.

Just received news that Aurizon is recruiting qualified drivers o/s including UK and South Africa to fill vacancies in Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Collie. They must be desperate as the advertisement says they will be travelling there to conduct testing! Costing them a fair bit I'd imagine.
