Boat People - where to now!

You won't see them resigning because they are doing what they promised. The boat quantities have reached an almost zero level (not bad in a few months). Let those in gov. now run the show without being told what to do by the ALP and Greens, they should remember they lost the election.

We have a Coalition Government that promised to Stop The Boats, but it hasn't.  If it did, we wouldn't have the weekly briefings from a politician and an Army Officer.

While I am at it, we have a Coalition Government that promised to Axe The Tax, but it cannot because too many idiots who voted for them in the House of Representatives also voted for the Greens in the Senate.  Paul Keating was correct when he described the Senate as unrepresentative swill and the sooner the Senate is abolished, the better.

We have a Coalition Government that, to date, has twice back flipped on Gonsky.

We have a Coalition Government that has just announced it will not honour its promise on the National Broadband Network.

Don't blame me.  I voted Labor in both the House of Reps and the Senate.

I would contend that VERY FEW voted Lib lower Green upper. You could do you bit by contacting your local Red section of the swill and telling them you, as their constituent and voter want them to side the Blue team and send the CT down. The Green team won't matter a fig then (as indeed they shouldn't).

What are your figures on illegal arrivals then? 1000s per month? A very reliable, but alas non quotable source, has total arrivals under the LNP to 1,061 from 20 boats contrasted against 1,134 arrivals in August and 651 under ALP/Green in September. Turn backs last month, 3 vessels carrying 142 - but remember, that is something THAT CANNOT BE DONE!

I don't remember any requirement for the Opposition to keep quiet. The Coalition won the last election partly because they never shut up whilst in opposition. As soon as a government loses an election, the scrapping/campaigning starts with the aim of getting back in power. Both sides do it, so I suggest you relax and learn to live with it.
Valvegear

The difference being that when in opposition the LNP said they would stop the boats and now in power they are.   When in Gov., the Labor/Greens said that you couldn't stop the boats, and now are objecting to the LNP doing what they said they would do.

'Operation Sovereign Borders' is a vote-winner.  I've seen recent polls to suggest that it's the one thing the public thinks Tony is doing a great job on.

There's no difference at all. Both sides, as I said, do this, and neither is particularly careful about the truth. I suppose that if you look with tinted spectacles you can find good in what one side does, and bad in the other for doing the same thing.

Year on year numbers would suggest that there is a very big difference.  No spectacles(tinted or otherwise) involved.
fzr560

"Year on numbers"? What the hell are you talking about?

You have also obviously missed my point.  It is not about one isolated policy/promise; it is about all oppositions mouthing off at the government immediately they become opposition. The tinted spectacles are worn by people who can't, or don't want to, see that all parties do it. The political cynics among us watch it happen.

What's yours?

Aaron failed to get it, you've obviously failed to get it.

Claims of 'national security' over a few leaky boats is utter bollocks and smacks of democracy North Korean style.

That’s because authoritarianism, secrecy and use of the military for state security has always played well to their small-minded, tightRsed supporters Rolling Eyes

So your idea of democracy would be that we listen to a bunch of people that can't win an election?

You're better at spotting these things than I am.  I had the impression that the language was completely different - but then again that might have been a ruse to throw people off.

I think that's an excellent idea, Aaron.  You may then hear differing points of view, and be able to weigh them up. It's something that's often done by those of us who don't look at the world through blue-tinted spectacles.

Secrecy is essential when it comes to ‘plausible deniability’, the pollies’ keep out of gaol card.
No doubt if one of these ‘operations’ went pear-shaped and people died it will fall back on the military as its ‘operational matter’. Hopefully they have airtight ‘rules of engagement’ that can't be misrepresented Exclamation

Groundrelay

It gels with Abbott's attempts to emulate the success of Johnny Howard by looking like he cares about our national sovereignty - all while he's secretly selling us out to big foreign interests with the Trans-Pacific Partnership and a lop-sided Free-Trade agreement with China.

But love it or hate it - this is the one policy that the voters really like and want more of.  Nothing seems to make Aussies angrier than footage of people in boats trying to get into the country, doesn't matter how legitimate their persecution is.  You can draw whatever conclusions you like about our xenophobia or whatever; voters just hate boat people with a passion.

The Greens (especially) should realise that there's no votes whatsoever in trying to be humanist or represent the interests of people trying to come here on boats and just tow the line.

I wouldn't label everyone in this country as driven by hatred – but apparently it’s a majority.
The whole military / we will protect you cr#p is for domestic consumption as it always goes down well with the mob.

don_dunstan

The Greens are naive about what drives most people. History has shown that intolerance and self interest has tended to prevail. People who can push that aside will always be a small minority.
As for towing the party line, everyone clapping in unison would seem appropriate (with Gloria as MC!) Rolling Eyes

If the Japs had arrived in dodgy boats in 1941 the Greens would have welcomed them.Sad

Because of the broken promises by the Libs, and the keeping this issue secret, their is unconfirmed reports that warning shots have been fired over an asylum seeker's boat. Of course, Secret Morrisson, is not saying one way or the another, which to me means, . . .!

Whether we like it or not, until they are determined to be illegal migrants, they are asylum seekers. Not saying I agree or disagree with that.

Newcastle Express

After they arrived in the first country away from their own, they were asylum seekers - when they started looking for other countries to settle in and pay for the boat ride they became illegal immigrants.

And what promise have the Libs broken - stop the boats and none arrived in four weeks.

Do we know that for a fact? So they were all turned around? I wasn't sure what was going on after reading Morrison is not briefing anyone about anything ever again.

Interesting.
