I suspect that the Liberal Vic government would prefer to ignore the public transport demand in the hope that people will be forced to their cars and continue to build more roads and then point to the declining use of public transport as the main reason for the roads development.
This is indicated in the government's insistence on the road tunnel and the lukewarm response to rail proposals.
Personally, I'm not in favor of a major rail tunnel anyway, I would favor extensions to the airport, Roweville, Doncaster and the electrified line to Melton and more improvements in this vein in the future. I'm afraid that a major rail tunnel will gobble up funds and there will be no further projects for ten years. I don't think this tunnel is needed for future expansions, it's just an excuse to delay all rail projects.
