Larger cabs are probably just for driver comfort and maneuverability. Perhaps there would be space for guards who are travelling the train to wait and come and go. The lip to the doors gone probably because (judging by the CG animation) the sides are flatter, better fitting the loading gauge and width and consequently being more 'flush' against the platform.
