Melbourne Metro Rail Project Revived

From what I read cost over runs in solar farms in Qld has done the damage
ngarner

While that might be the straw that broke the camel's back, I doubt that it is the cause of the collapse into administration.

The original ABC article notes that they took a $57 million writedown on two solar farms. They then raised $100 million from investors in August 2018. Audited statements to the ASX then stated that they were sitting on $140 million in cash. An AGM in October with no flags. A month later the company has gone into administration.

There is more to that story than cost over runs on solar farms.

This thread's been a bit quiet of late, probably due to the election closing down a lot of avenues of info from the government, however the Metro Tunnel Facebook page has some video of the first road header starting to excavate the State Library station site, courtesy of Channel 7 news:

Stupid question/query time.

How is it the TBM's for the West Gate Tunnel project are scheduled to leave for Melbourne in a weeks time:

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/all-night-earth-eater-bella-on-its-way-to-melbourne-20181209-p50l5k.html

yet the machines for the Metro Rail project are still vapourware?

I would assume it’s because site prep was a hell of a lot harder in the tight spaces the Metro Tunnel is travelling through, compared to the waterfront acreage the West Gate folks have to work with.

Just a guess though.

I have a memory that there was an article about the Metro TBMs being constructed a number of months ago. Problem is I don't remember where, or when, I saw it; Rail Express, IRJ or a newspaper?
There's also the fact that the none of the TBM launch, or retrieval, sites are all that close to ready for TBMs so the Metro ones can't be launched for some time yet, so why hurry their construction?

Neil

Edit: Although this isn't the article I referred to above it does give some info about delivery dates; supposedly early next year

Metro TBMs

This may have been what I saw originally. This article says the first should be here this month but is 8 months old

For a split second I thought we were digging an undersea tunnel to the Philippians.

Big news this evening. One of the main engineering contractors for the project has gone bust:

Engineering firm with more than 3,400 staff goes into administration

Slightly OT but RCR-Tomlinson's rail business has been sold to John Holland, so the Loop station refurbishment will continue just under a different company name.

Just the acting Premier trying to get his media profile up by doing a presser on site, I would imagine. It's always interesting to hear the construction details though.

Well I'd check this video shown about 2 months ago, what kinda construction is going to take place at Parkville.

It's gonna be one big hole in the ground.

Site establishment has begun in earnest at West Footscray during the current occo with delineation fencing being installed alongside the Down suburban line and clear access over a pad on the goods lines being established.

Looks like turnback and station work will kick off pretty soon.

At South Kensington footings for new stanchions on the Through Suburban (Sunbury) lines are being poured and underground service relocation between the Main Suburban and RRL tracks is taking place.

The decline structure is also beginning to take shape in precast concrete and the bridge over Kensington Rd is being reinforced.

Major excavation kicks off at Anzac, so all five stations are now being dug.

Something else, and with apologies to @trainbrain, who is under no obligation to read anything I post:

https://www.audit.vic.gov.au/report/melbourne-metro-tunnel-project-phase-1-early-works-0

An audit int the Early Works phase of the project is now underway and due for completion in May 2019. This will be very interesting given that the Auditor-General was scathing of the level crossing project at a number of levels.

My guess is that very similar findings will be made here - poor accounting transparency, probable cost overruns, and a "finish at all costs" mentality driven from the highest level.

I'm not so sure about that - LXRA was driven by political promises, whereas Metro Tunnel began out of the Department.

I think the Auditor-General might be critical of the way their scope has been expanded though, the Ballarat Line Upgrade and all the extra projects will probably come up.

This is a trifle speculative but based on the Port of Melbourne shipping arrivals and the Metro tunnel website, the ship 'Wide Alpha' due at Swanston West dock 3 at 8:30pm today is most likely the vessel carrying the first TBM having left the port of Shenhen last month.
Be interesting to see which politician gets the guernsey to go and greet it, or be there when it is unloaded, for the Premiers media release website.

Given the boss and JA are both back in the hard hat this week (was still summer holidays when the West Gate TBM arrived) I think it'll be the two of them, and maybe the new kid on the block Ms Horne as well.

Well, my speculation was wrong!
The Metro web site indicates the ship has only just entered Victorian waters and suggests that it is to tie up at Webb Dock.
The ship movements site doesn't have any ships docking at Webb Dock from a foreign port shipping but two from Chinese ports are arriving at Swanston Dock on the 6th.
Looks like we'll just have to wait for Andrews to show off his new toy before we know definitely

There are rumours it in fact arrived on the AAL Fremantle the morning before. Is that a possibility?
  ngarner Junior Train Controller

Certainly is possible as the Metro page does say the ships position is only indicative and various promotional statements sourced from the government said it would arrive "before the end of January". That did make me wonder about a February arrival.

Minor, but the plans for the infrastructure (egress structure, flood mitigation strategy at the western portal etc) to be built at either portal are on public display until the 22nd of Feb https://metrotunnel.vic.gov.au/planning/planning-approvals/portal-development-plans

The TBM must have fallen off the ship en route, or the ship has broken down, as the Metro web site has said nothing about it for nearly a week and has shown the ship approaching Port Philip Heads for the last four or more days! That and Andrews, et al, haven't made any efforts to promote their new toy to the voters of Victoria.

Am I the only one getting a bit too excited about the distant prospect of a new tunnel now that major construction is beginning to ramp up?

Parts of it may already be there. From the Upfield line train today I noticed a number of very large plastic wrapped shapes stored next to the station box at Arden St.
