    The Victorian Government has announced a $39 million investment by Australia's largest private rail operator, SCT Logistics, to expand its operations in the state, including a new rail hub for Wodonga in the north-east.

    The Government said the company would increase rail freight between Melbourne and Brisbane, through the new rail freight hub at the Logic Estate near Wodonga.

    If I read the other news on here correctly this will generate quite a bit of new traffic for SCT as they will be running louvre vans in and out of that location.  

    Means SCT will be running on the NE?

    We are all very excited up here  about this new yard and terminal.

    The local word is SCT traffic for supermarkets.

    The traffic will be coming in from the north and also the south.

    Talk up here as well about the coal sidings being restarted.

    Graet News.   It has been rumoured for quite a while now that if the rail access to the Woolworths Distribution Centre at Wodonga was to go ahead, this in association with SCT's current contract with Heinz in Brisabane which is currently serviced by SCT vans being attached to Aurizon trains between Melbourne and Brisbane would form the catalyst for SCT to commence their own operation of a service between Altona/Melbourne and Brisbane.

    In a rare instance of future proofing at least the NE Standardization Project in its design of the signalling etc will enable the provision of access to the NE Main from the Woolworths facility.

    I have no doubt SCT once this project is completed will build their north-south business quite substantially in the way that they have on the East west Corridor out of Parkes, Adelaide and Melbourne.   Their big advantage is that they are a truly integrated logistics provider.

    From then local discussion the loading will be inbound and be delivered in louvre vans.

    Is this enough to build a Brisbane blind service or will the loading be worked in to exchange sidings which is what is being suggested locally.

    Where are those spare Y class ?

    One of the track people told me they, the private operators have been trying to get a track into the logistics centre for at least the last seven years and were prevented from doing so by short sited governments. He stated the logistics centre had been laid out from the start for rail access.

    Its almost sure extra  signalling will be required as although both lines have bi directional signalling, the west line south bound uses long sections. The south  bound section extending down to Wangarratta.

    The junction location, if its near the logistics centre is 7 kilometres beyond the outer signal for the double crossover at Wodonga West so one assumes the junction will have its own signalls, so there goes a couple million. Money well spent though.

    Freightgate, a lot of this has also to do with how Woolworths currently distrubutes freight going out from Wodonga (and where it's going to),  as well as that going in.  A good example is how SCT operates at Parkes/Goobang Junction, where there is freight sourced by road from multiple locations and then consolidated onto their trains.   I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Woolworths branded trailers currently going by road out of Wodonga headed to Melbourne could end up with some of that being on rail to Altona and distributed from there and traffic generated in the Goulburn Valley for Woolworths being road hauled into Wodonga and then railed north from there that might previously have gone by road out of Wodonga.  Obviously it won;t be all as the Woolworths trailers go direct to store to multiple destinations but there is likely to be some consolidation opportunity with SCT.

    When yuo think about it the hub and spoke effect created by this enables almost endless opportunities for consolidation onto rail both inbound as well as outbound.  

    As stated earlier SCT only has to reach a critical mass of what I would base tonneage to then move into running trains in their own right to/from Brisbane.   No doubt Woolworths sources significant supply products from Queensland and elsewhere that can be consolidated onto a train out of there which already has the Heinz traffic.

    This is also my understanding.  The Napthine government was not interested in the slightest and would not provide any support which is not surprising.

    This is the way of the future. SCT with the business that other operators were happy to exit.  Go figure.  One has to wonder what treasures await SCT in Mildura with SG going through.

    How much pressure might this move place on the logistics hub in the east of South Australia off the main line?

    The emergence of SCT as a real threat to PN's intermodal business should not be misunderstood.

    PN has been embarrassing. They hve dumped a large amount of rail business an the customers have voted with their feet.

    Who said LCL was dead ?

    Far from it when done correctly.

    PN have made a mess of rail freight.  Everything they seem to touch turns to crap.  Most of the intrastate traffic has gone in Victoria under their management.  They left Tasmania a wasteland and now have a shrinking intermodal business.

    Customers have moved on.  They have only kept customers directly connected with their main forwarder TOLL.  Coal is down.  It is not looking pretty.  They also lost Petroleum in  NSW and VIC.  Quite a mess.

    Some intermodal freight forwarders want to get off PN.  Maryvale they lost. Logs gone.

    A damning record as a shareholder you would be very displeased.

    SCT have gone the other way. integrated and profitable and long term sustained growth.

    Not defending PN here, but a few things should be clarified.

    Loss of fuel: Changes in the taxing of fuel haulage made it a double dip by the Vic government if both rail and road was used, and closure of the loading point in NSW. Caltex I'm pretty sure would still be on rail in NSW if they had a separate loading point to Shell

    PN out of Gippsland: The Maryvale contract was the whole logistics side of the contract (road haulage as well). QUBE could offer a better package deal on that and that is why they have that contract. PN was technically subcontracted by whoever was doing the logistics. And the log train was a combination of several reasons.... the main one being that black Saturday wiped out a large portion of trees, and the loggers were called in to cull all the dead wood. Pretty sure the customer doesn't want to go rail  shipping at this stage either.

    This is the thin end of the wedge!

    What will kill long distance road transport is energy costs, as previously mentioned rail uses only a fraction of the fuel per ton kilometre than road transport. If you talk to any small time trucking business (less than say 20 trucks) you will find they live in constant dread of fuel price rises. I am not kidding!

    A fantastic post.

    SCT told to go away and leave rail alone.  Must be the Australian way.  I wonder what other disasters this man has been subsequently involved in?

    Anyhow well done SCT and I hope it works out.  Any timeframe on when the new yard will be commissioned and how it will be connected to the main?

    Can I assume the works will be carried out by ARTC and contractors?

    Hope fully Victrack will be left out of the picture as it is only SG no BG anymore.

    True.
    It was National Rail that ruined AN and that was a political decision where NR under Vince Graham was a 'means to an end'.
    Granted NR made mistakes and SCT was one of them but overall NR was a fabulous success subsequently destroyed by privatisation.

    Vince did work for NR not AN.  I think that was what @freightgate was trying to say.

    Pushing SCT off the network was a mistake by Graham. There were others including refusing to shunt on the docks being another I was told.

    Back on topic.  SCT have adopted an integrated approach to logistics using rail very effectively.  I do wonder why SCT have not done a deal with Scotts to do some joint warehousing and logistics with a rail connection at Mount Gambier.

    What's the story about the "Coal Siding" at Wodonga been restarted ?

    The original plan was for the new freight hub at North Barnawartha was to replace all the sidings around Wodonga.

    The coal siding has had Its rail access option cut buy a new Murray Valley highway Interchange, has It not ?

    The new freight hub is a logistics hub as I have interpreted.  This is not an intermodal terminal nor  a bulk handling facility.

    Logs are rumoured to be on the cards once more. The logistics terminal is an SCT terminal.

    Bulk log to be loaded at the historical location. There is no item place.

    The terminal to the north is not configured for bulk and lacks the space.

    Vincent Graham comments I was referring to national rail not Australian national. Please excuse my age.
