Will check with someone that I know that happens to be pumper 43.

Was the first fire also an arson attack?

The police will probably not say just yet.  They could be related.

Seriously?

It was an electrical fault. That's what Steamrail have publicly said. Until such time as that changes, this constant paranoia and speculation isn't helping - in fact, it's quite possibly doing harm.

In times like this railfans should be banding together. Donate money, donate your time; if you can't do either of those, then just keep the conspiracy theories to yourselves.

Thanks for the support Michael.

Speaking with many Steamrail members, it is upsetting to many to see all the various comments posted on the online communities about these fires. The authorities have informed us that the first fire was caused by an electrical fault, while the most recent fire is being investigated by the police as a deliberate act of arson. The police and fire authorities have not drawn a link between either fire, and there is no evidence to suggest they are linked.

Having said that, if anyone out there thinks they know better, or has any information which could help them find the culprit, I urge you to make this information available to the police.

Before posting your next speculative post or conspiracy theory, please think of the volunteers and private individuals who have either invested significant time or money in these items of rollingstock. Whether they were lovingly restored or simply saved for the future, they were treasured assets. Those affected by the fires have enough sorrow as it is, without the added weight of conspiracy theories and machinations.

So, how can you help? If you can't assist in person or financially, Steamrail would like to know about your side of the story, provided you have some facts to back up your statements. If you believe this is you, then you're encouraged to contact the Secretary (secretary@steamrail.com.au), or write to them, PO Box 125 Newport VIC 3015.

Lionel.

There have been references to the wonderful work by the volunteers from Steamrail. To think that someone or some people have deliberately engaged in arson is terrible.  The people(s) responsible must be devoid of any respect for those volunteers and the people in the community who are lucky enough to travel on heritage trains.

Let us all hope the police can work this case and find out who or whom have been responsible.

Sorry to be a pain SN 7.  Were these cars totally destroyed or are any restorable.   Being out of town its a bit hard to gleen from the posts what was salvaged and what was lost which as others have is a terrible terrible shame.

Very, very sorry to hear about this particular casualty.  I grew up loving The Overland, so it meant a lot to me personally - and I travelled in this very roomette car at least once in the 1970s - in fact, almost sure it was at least twice, counting a return journey as two occasions.
I saw a news report about this on T.V. at the time, and it included brief shots of the fire, and I thought I recognized the distinctive corrugated metal panels and I knew that part of the old Overland was gone.

Regards, Michael.

Was only recently moved to Newport.

I am at a loss as to how the criminals got in.
