Police are now hunting an arsonist.  One of the cars lost according to media reports was an ex Overland car.

Why? One was an electrical fault, the other was arson.

Yes, the link is that they were both fires that destroyed/damaged railway stock

Really?  Why then are the Police actively looking for an Arsonist?

While there were two fires, one was electrrical at fault, and this one may be arson. If so the police would be looking......  This one was different, ir was no fault.......

Err, because they're cops and they tend to know what they're doing?

Nah, you're right. Let's all armchair speculate and second-guess all the decisions made by people far more informed than us.

Channel 7 likely have access to better information than you do, and it doesn't stop you making uninformed comments all over this website every day, so what's your point?

Actually on the news report I saw, a fireman at the scene said there were two points of ignition and accelerant may have been used. I think that rates better than speculation.

It would be an odd coincidence if they were not. Unfortunately it may be the same perpetrators.

Regardless, a real kick-in-the-guts for those who put their time and skill into something that brings joy to so many. Sad

This is what I was thinking.  It is just too convenient.  Someone has it in for the site or the organisation or they simply have serious issues or all three.

Sad that this has happened and the work of so many dedicated people has been targeted.

When I lived on that side of town there were a lot of selfish acts targeting community groups - the spiral staircase from the old substation was stolen (presumably for scrap) WHILE the volunteers were restoring it. Some a-hole must have had inside information before breaking in - heartbreaking for the people who were working on it and a piece of history lost forever.

The preservation side of Newport shops was also a constant target for thieves before they put the new fencing up - basins and luggage racks were their favourite thing to make off with. There's no words to describe how low an act it is to steal from volunteer organisations, it really makes me angry.

If you mean the vehicle on fire, it looks like a Vinelander sleeping car from what I can see.

Presumably W244 is owned by 707 Operations?

The W looks to have been saved although the front is not visible.
