Webb Dock could be better served by a line under the Yarra opposite the dock, the original line was a white elephant. And what has the Rail Revival Alliance got to do with this subject anyway?

Congratulations on the photo by the way, nice media touch, find the worst photo of the person you are lampooning.

Why was the original line white elephant?

A line under the Yarra would seem the most sensible.  Let's not forget the Maribynong River container terminal which is now cut off from rail i read on the other thread.

The original line ran along a road and cut through a myriad of new development areas in the Port, and the developers of Webb Dock never really used it anyway. It was simply in the way of everyone.

If they tunnelled under the Yarra, there is a very handy connection to rail just on the other side of the river, and it could be very beneficial.

It has been cut for some time and the thread regarding this line is extensive.
Most of the track was removed a few years ago from the yard and the rest covered.
I have it on very good authority that if there was access and a shuttle to the port available, they were very interested in using it to remove the excessive number of trucks from the road.  But it was not to be.

It's hard to see Andrews wanting to stump up the big $$$ required for a freight-only tunnel given they're trying to flog the whole lot off. Although maybe the new owners could insist on some infrastructure upgrades as part of the sale package? Don't know.

The whole Webb Dock area Is planed future residential development.

No Government Is going to build  big ticket freight rail Infrastructure, only to see It fall Into disuse and become completely redundant.

Unless any new tunnels could form part of a future Newport to Clifton Hill metro, but very unlikely !

I notice In the latest Melway that an underground tunnel Is planed along Fennel to connect to Collins Street, probably for trams.

Yarra River/Victoria Harbour boaters and apartment dwellers are hell bent against any plans for a bascule bridge across their waterway !

I am not sure what good such a bridge would do, as there is nowhere for the rail to connect to on the northern side of the river.

Over what time frame?  There has recently been a new lease provided to an international company called VICT.   This is a 40 year lease!

The company is headquartered in the Philippines
