Well it seems as though that they are going to make fixing pollys entitlements, a "top priority of 2017" if you believe SBS/ABC news tonight, seems they are going to fix up the grey areas of what actually is "official business"

On reflection maybe what they should do is just provide them with unlimited free domestic travel while they are ministers as a perk of the job (perhaps less ministerial allowances to adjust for it) and make the back-benchers have to have their travel pre-approved through a central travel bureau - or something like that. If they had a management system like that then maybe it could keep most of them out of trouble?

The problem is (I guess) that even with an open ledger you would still get spoilt brats like Helicopter Bishop demanding that they should have first class seats on the Hindenburg when the bus is probably quicker.

It doesn't matter how generous the system is you will always have people who want to abuse it somehow.

It's probably the Adelaide establishment. They never forgave me for wearing pink shorts to parliament...

I'll tell you who's even less popular than me - Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten - according to The Australian (pay-wall) they are the most unpopular political leaders we've had in 20 years:

An analysis of Newspoll surveys taken exclusively for The Australian reveals Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten are the least wanted pair since Paul Keating faced off against Alexander Downer in 1994-95...The most recent Newspoll, taken early last month after the final two weeks of parliament for the year, showed 27 per cent of voters did not prefer either Mr Turnbull or Mr Shorten.

Oh, for someone you can actually vote for...

As if to emphasise the fact that politicians have no idea, Bronnie Bishop goes onto Sky News tonight and mounts a spirited defence of Susan Ley's use of government travel entitlements (Guardian Australia): ..

If you receive benefits provided by the state with a value that exceeds your contribution to its coffers then society is covering the balance i.e. she's a hypocrite.

Speaking of the entitled ones it seems the current Bishop has been out and about exercising her privileges Surprised

The politicians will defeat any bureaucratic set up by threats, deceit, stealth, lies or plain corruption and all we will be left with is another 1,000 public servants to be stood over by their political masters.

The only solution is honesty, professional integrity, responsibility and simple plain decency. Ha bloody ha, what a joke. SadRolling Eyes

I see that the media tart Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is now under scrutiny for going to the polo at our expense, no doubt to negotiate a defence alliance with the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean (or perhaps to sell it to some of her cronies for a 99 star hotel).

Clearly, the Bronyn Helicopter episode was only a small part of what has become a fleet of A380s.

Apparently Ley is a pilot of some sort and charters/hires aircraft from time to time, at our expense of course,  to go places so that she can keep up her hours to maintain her pilot's licence.

The whole show stinks.

No - it was to hob-nob with the east coast elite at the Portsea Polo. It's part of the business of being Foreign Minister (of course) - get with the program!

Culleton gone...
Graham4405
I haven't really been following the Culleton thing that closely but he's said and done some seemingly very silly things. You have to wonder about Pauline's capacity to select people given it was a shoo-in that they were going to get a senate spot in WA - he obviously wasn't a team player right from the get-go.

Does Pauline get automatic right to fill the casual senate vacancy herself? I thought someone mentioned earlier that the situation was complicated somehow.

I'm still surprised that Tony Abbott actually got Bronnie Bishop dis-endorsed from her seat over the helicopter row... although it was an incredibly serious error of judgement on her part to charter a helicopter to attend a Liberal Party fund-raiser. The fact that she was actually sacked from her Liberal Party endorsement goes to show how bad her mistake was I guess.

As YM-Mundrabilla already mentioned Susan Ley has often insisted on chartering her own plane at taxpayer expense to ensure that she keeps her flight experience up as a pilot - something that was costing the government thousands of dollars more than a commercial flight every single time she did it. What I want to know is: Who was approving the vast extra expense every time a plane was chartered and why wasn't she pulled up on it earlier?

Seems that the Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt has also come under scrutiny regarding entitlements, in relation to a trip that he took to QLD, the PM needs to make a statement on this today and clear the whole thing up, the way the rules are at the moment, there are so many loop holes it's not funny, no wonder you see the PM and various other heads of state at huge sporting matches around the world - ur.. on official business of course Wink

Don't have a problem with the sitting PM, whoever it happens to be at the time. They should attend big events.

I can't find the link now but apparently it cost taxpayers $6,000 for Susan Ley to charter a plane and fly from Canberra to Melbourne. How many air-fares could she have bought for that? It makes no sense whatsoever that she was doing that and nobody was pulling her up on it.

These people really need to give every trip some kind of probity test - or at least thirty seconds thought - before they spend money. If Susan Ley honestly couldn't reflect on the fact that it isn't appropriate for her to spend $6,000 on ONE TRIP so that she can keep up her hours as a pilot (not actually in her job description) then she really needs to go to the back-bench - if not lose her Liberal Party endorsement like Helicopter Bishop did.
