For those members in South Australia Railpage has secured a railcam site in your state and is currently installing the project.

Expected completion date would at this stage be around mind February 2016. We have also have a resource to manage the cameras and the data tagging but are always happy to have more people involved.

The cameras will make real time video and image updates to Railpage Central and will be High Definition Cameras.

If you would like to assist with the project please contact us on the thread so we can move discussions forward.

Having recently retired after 33 years in IT I'm interested in assisting.  Location may be a factor if you're wanting people able to physically attend however (since much of this thread has been discussing Port Augusta as a site).

Thanks. The first installation is not at port Augusta.

I will create a new thread for the Adelaide installation.

Railpage together with Mount Lofty will operate a series of Railcam services from the Station which is to the east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills.

The current plan is for two cameras to be installed from a baseline perspective planned to be:

Mount Lofty - West
(facing West in the UP direction)

Mount Lofty - East
(facing East in the DOWN direction)

The cameras as mentioned will provide stills and video of all passing rail traffic.  The data will be transmitted to Railcam Central in Melbourne.  Here it will be stored, catalogued and made available online.

Currently planning has the project completed around the end of February 2016.  Quotations regarding cabling works have been obtained.  Camera hardware and routing equipment has been ordered.

This is all great news.

Mt Lofty has been a favourite spot to view freight movements for many years

Rumour as fact, an enterprising young railfan played a significant role in the initiatiation of this project and in due course, he should be commended for it.

Can't wait for this to happen as if the video is taken then the sound would be fantastic coming from the station.

It is great to see a young railfan thinking of this and assisting the people here to get it going. Cane they be named and are they in for some special treatment from the team?

Anybody care to nominate a firm date for launch?

Hardware has to be delivered to Melbourne and configured first, while cabling is installed on-site. Then it has to be mounted and tested.

With that in mind, I don't think it's appropriate to place a delivery date on what is (with the exception of cabling) a volunteer effort.

By way of Project Update.

The IP camera equipment has been ordered and is in transit to Melbourne. Switching hardware has been ordered and is in transit.  I have engaged formally with the cabling contractor (SA based) and now need to provide a design for the cabling and the camera locations.

I have written to Jim asking for a photo and ideas on where the best area to place the cameras might be.  The cameras might be better separated (one at each end of the building) so this will need to be determined in the next couple of days.

Once the equipment has arrived and we have staged all hardware, I will arrange shipping to the site and formally arrange the cabling works to be completed.  We are anticipating installation prior to the end of this month all other things being equal.

Update

The camera locations have been potentially identified and final designs are nearing completion.  Jim has provided some great photos of the site.

We are progressing well.

Any thoughts on the positioning of the cameras would be greatly appreciated.

I don't suppose that tower can be used to our advantage?

The tower is owned and maintained by ARTC.  So we would have to make an approach at some point.

This is really good news @bevans as that location will see some variety of trains including intra-state grain and interstate goods and intermodal.  Are you still tracking to March?

All equipment has arrived with the exception of the camera microphones which are still in transit from China.  The microphones are required as these provide sound for the video's which will be recorded each time a train passes and made available for viewing.

Once this arrive we will be ready to complete the installation.
