Ascot Station

Travelling through Ascot station a few days ago I noted that the second platform has been disconnected from the main line.

Are they planning on ripping up that section of track?

Cheers,
Tristan.

The rails to that second platform looked pretty rusty last time I looked. Is the overhead contact wire still in place?

It was when I last dropped by:

In the past i read it was only ever kept in use as training exercise because of the old signalling. It had no function in the Doomben timetable and has not been used as a passing loop for probably decades. However that training requirement (names escapes me) finished more than a few years ago, maybe after NCL upgrade I don't know.

I thought however certain race trains may have used it at some time in past, but as the both the races and using the railway to get there are not what they once where its probably along time back now.

Removing O/H on tracks not used by sparks is not something QR is re-known for so expect it to be there for decades to come. Case in Point is barely 1km down the line beyond Doomben at old Airport which probably still has the O/H up even after the satilite photo shows the platform removed with O/H still in place. Was this ever used by suburban sparks? Then you have AR and the line to Emerald.

Yes it was. I forget the specifics, but it was when Airport was renamed Eagle Farm (and when the original Eagle Farm was closed).  It was intended for a nearby TAFE college, and was only certain services.  I forget how long it lasted.

Thanks all.

Looking at the state of the line and the state of the points (when they were there) and rodding etc, it looks like it was quite some time since that track was used.

The o/head power lines are still in place.

Cheers,
Tristan.

The local interlocking at Ascot hasn't been used in years and last time anyone went into the signal box most of the levers were frozen in place/disconnected. The wire will be taken down at a later date. Hamilton yard is due to be ripped up this year too.

On race days at Doomben they'll stick another train down at Old Airport and in Platform 2 at Doomben just to hold them for the crowds.

There was some talk of merging both Doomben and Ascot clubs, I tend to support this. Ascot is the better and close to PT.
