Several reasons but mostly to do with the fact that not being a democratic and open society will probably cause them to collapse in on themselves eventually, just like the Soviet Union did. The lack of a proper legal system is another enormous disadvantage, it means that whichever cabal is in charge of the Politburo is able to persecute their rivals without challenge.
If you want to glimpse the future look to the past: Mao starved to death tens of millions to head off a potential counter-revolutionary action from the peasantry in the 'Great Leap Forward'. He then embarked on several years of destroying universities, schools, research institutions - summarily executing leaders and managers, academics and anyone else he didn't like in the name of the 'Cultural Revolution', supposedly about keeping the revolutionary ideals fresh but in reality a never-ending pogrom that killed or imprisoned all their best and brightest.
I'd expect Xi to go down the same path eventually, especially if he feels threatened by what's going on in Hong Kong - if Xi goes crazy Mao did there's actually no mechanism by which he can be removed from office now as he's appointed himself Chairman for life. Our western democratic institutions have many, many faults - but we do have the capacity to dispose of despots if they try to entrench themselves at the top. Not so in a communist country.
Oh Don, You know I don't like China, but the truth is in front us. and you are well aware of my spelling problem
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the 100 flowers campaign too, Purposeful act of purging or attempt to show a human side? The Party been intrenched in Chinese Society for roughly 70 years? Quit dreaming, the Chinese unlike the USSR in its last 15 years have a strong economy that has experienced unprecedented economic growth. Xi is indeed now chairman for life, does that change my position? no, I still think that they will surpass the United States at the current rate there going, may not be ideal but its a reality we are highly likely to face in the future.
More like Rural commune's falsifying results combined with the nationwide urge to 'surpass Britain' in steel production mixed with a bunch of natural disasters. Famines happened for centuries in china, with the most notable one prior happening in the late 1920s, I've said all that before anyhow. It's fascinating how there enthusiasm got themselves killed and also why would the CCP attempt to kill off the class were they had gained support from and came to power with largely peasant support. The Term pogrom implies anti Semitic nature, It's fascinating how out of control that got with the party essentially loosing control of all its major urban centres. The Party I'll say again is entrenched in Chinese society and I highly doubt its going away soon. (ignore that in 1964 they developed atomic weapons with no outside assistance)
I'd Expect Xi to do nothing, let the Chaos, unfold and then do a Tank man mark 2 if they face any serious opposition. There still is a way to impeach him if the party really wants too, the changes he made allow him to serve more than 2 terms in office, a little thing that was inlace since Maos death and, does not hold power like a despot as the west makes him out to be. If he f#cks up the politburo will shift him out. Nearly every leader of the CCP has been Booted out by the party, not death. this is inlace to prevent another Mao-like leader from arising.
and if your naive enough to think everything would be flowers and rainbows under the Kuomintang, a reminder that things were just as crap under them with despot leaders and famines too.
