It was going to apparently but has for the moment been retained.
Trainplanner

Why would you entertain removing access to Ararat Yard from the East from Maryborough.  Would make it very hard to add and drop loading for west/east bound freights

There is nothing in the business case to suggest that.

Ill drill into the tender documents i downloaded a month or so ago later tonight and check.

Hi James, I have not seen the tender docs but I suppose it would be too much to ask for them to have included a drawing showing the layout of Ararat yard after completion of the project?

It seems utter madness to suggest removing the link to the SG mainline but then again this is Victoria we're talking about here.......

Looks like the tender docs do reflect that the existing westbound connection is not going to be upgraded.  Though as Trainplanner has said, perhaps this has changed since these were released given that the detail was made clearer.  I can't believe that they'd do that and reduce the optionality in the network.....

PM me your emails and ill send through.

Does this mean the existing westbound connection is not going to be upgraded

Stays In It's current out of service overgrown condition, In preparation for future reopening.

Made serviceable as a low speed siding, but not resleepered.

The connection abolished with no turnout Installed at the Avoca end.

It would be Interesting to see the plans for the new direct connection between the Maryborough line and the Maroona line (Ararat triangle)

I'm guessing the curving track will pass through the former Ararat Loco Depot between the water towers and the turntable.

The Maroona end turnout of the triangle looks like It would be tight location on a short section of straight track, where a mixed gauge diamond would be required to cross over the broad gauge track (the broad gauge will probably be slewed/bowed out the lessen the diamond cross angle.

Standardisation of the Wendouree - Ararat line would sure permit the simplification of the Ararat track layout.

What future does the remaining part of the former Ararat Loco Depot roundhouse hold ?
The place Is rundown and trashed by vandals.

Some Work has started on Maryborough-Ararat line with the removal of trees/vegetation at the Maryborough end of the line.
At the Ararat end there is a large pile of sleepers in the gas site in grano st that backs on the Maryborough-Ararat line.

Where is the signal in the top photo located and what does it represent and/or protect, please?

Protecting the currently disconnected junction with the marybough/ballarat section. Been there, and lit all through the line closure. Take a look at the sygnal diagram here http://www.sa-trackandsignal.net/Pdf%20files/VCRN/VL1166.pdf

Thanks Galron.
Nothing surprises me anymore.
I assume that the top light is a fixed red, rather than as it appears, yellow.
That should save a $ squillion in signalling costs (until it has to be pulled down and replaced, that is). Smile

There's a photo on Vicsig that mentions it was converted to LED and moved for sighting reasons sometime in 2013.
I'd link to it but that site is hard to link to a specific image description.

So it's already been upgraded at least once during the closure!

So somebody managed to secure funding for an upgrade to signalling on a disused railway.

Sounds about right to me.

It might be they knew the line would inevitably re-open anyway...

Doesn't matter, they will rip it all out and fit it with new signaling.

Driving along the Pyrenees Highway between Ararat and Maryborough last week,

There had been some unusual roadworks near Dunneworthy, where the road was widened and what looked a large U turning bowl built, with pavement going up to the railway !

Is this related to the upgrade of the railway ? a materials loading site ?

There would have to be a major upgrade to level crossings along the line, on the cards !

Many minor roads are only protected by a caution triangle sign.

The highway crossing will probably get booms, pre warning system and 80 km/h zones (as per other highway crossings)

The real reason the line has been out of service is that the signal has been permanently set to red for the last 20 yrs......

Incorrect it has not be set for red for 20 years. Maryborough yard will be heavily abolished get your photos why you can.

It did go Green in 2004.  And XR558 did venture a few km from Ararat to collect some of the wagons in Nov 2011.

Did anybody get any shots of the last trip down to clear the rest of them out?

Was last year some time I believe.

The line is fairly overgrown, especially near Ararat.
