Roseworthy Expansion

The local authority has just approved the concept of a significant expansion of Roseworthy town. Initial plans included a rail link to Gawler. The new town centre is not finalised, it may be near the existing or nearer the campus. The track is there to the station site but a new variation would be needed if the centre moved.

SHAME!

Some the best, if not the best, cereal growing land in SA.

To be covered with acres and acres of tar and cement. Little boxes on the hill side!

We really need to densify suburbs along existing transport corridors. Getting some jobs wouldn't a bad idea either.
Are people living at Roseworthy really going to commute to the Adelaide CBD, I think not.

This is just ridiculous. Has nobody stopped to realise that agriculture will be SA's only significant industry before long?

Or that the developers could wait a couple of years and start building their shoeboxes on a certain big site at Elizabeth South once Holden has stopped building sh1tboxes there?

If you need a perfect example of why councils should be abolished and replaced with administrative regions, this is it.

As for the railway, I don't think the state government will be interested in anything other than noting it as a potential future option. The rail route south dodges around the place where people would actually want to go (the centre of Gawler) while a bus would give a direct one seat ride.

For a train to be successful, there would have to be other changes to drive patronage - perhaps closing the Gawler Centrelink and making people from Roseworthy go to Elizabeth instead?

The updated 30 year plan for Adelaide proposes that 85% of new housing to be infill, rather than greenfield development. I think this is a step in the right direction, given that the original proportion was 30%. Right now the proportion is sitting at around 70%.

I know of one person who used to commute from Roseworthy to Mile End to work for a few years. But I doubt if he still did whether it would pay the bills on that line. In his instance he would drive to Gawler and catch the train to work from there and at night get the train to Gawler and then drive home to Roseworthy.

Although he would occasionally spend the night curled up under The Bakewell Bridge.

Well, I have a friend who lives in Kapunda and drives to, then catches the train from, Gawler for his daily commute.... so that's one person who will benefit from any rail extension/reinstatement to the north... slightly. Very Happy

Cheers!

When the Mandurah line was in planning, there were 23 commuters. Now they fill a 6 car set. If you build a new urban infill, there will be 3 journeys dominating, local to TAFE, Gawler and Adelaide with some contraflow to Roseworthy if the station is near the campus. What you also get are households where one partner works locally and one in Adelaide.
