I was wondering if we could get some places where the Victorian Rail Network misses. Post below and I will try and make a new network map.
I think what should happen is electrification to Melton and extension of the Alamein line to Chadstone and Oakleigh, perhaps even Monash. The track between Burnley and Camberwell should be quadruplicated to allow Lilydale/Belgrave trains to run express between the two stations, with the Oakleigh/Monash trains servicing the stations in between.I think the electrification of Melton line should go out to Baccus Marsh as V/Lines get too full. The Alamein Line could cover the proposed Rowville line.
G'day all.Yes, all great ideas! Upfield to Wallan could be separate to Upfield to Craigieburn. Lalor to Wollert could have a station in between called North Epping.Cranbourne could be extended further out to Koo Wee Rup. Werribee to Wyndham Vale could go out to Tarneit and loop onto its self later down the track. Frankston to Baxter already exists as part the Stony Point line; however, the Stony Point line could be electrified and linked to the Frankston line. The Melton line should go out to Baccus Marsh, as the Pakenham line is longer than that. The Baccus Marsh line could have added stops at East Rockbank and West Rockbank, Melton Central, Kurunjang, Hopetoun Park, Baccus Marsh Central and Darley. The Geelong line could be electrified all the way to Waurn Ponds. It could stop where the Baccus Marsh line stops up to Caroline Springs then express to Little River then stopping all stations to Waurn Ponds. There would be no need for V/Line trains to stop at any stations on from Baccus Marsh/Little River. Thanks for your response.
Several suburban extensions planned are Upfield to Wallan via Craigieburn, possibly Lalor to Wollert, Cranbourne to Clyde (reopening part of the Leongatha line) which in my opinion should be to Koo Wee Rup, Werribee to Wyndham Vale with stabling, Frankston to Baxter with Stabling and the old chestnuts Melton and Geelong. About to start construction is reopening of the line from South Morang to Mernda. I personally think it should be reopened all the way to Whittlesea.
I would think you could start with a loop connection between Fairfield and Camberwell.The Fairfield and Camberwell loop would be a good idea with stops at Victoria Gardens, Kew, Kew East, Balwyn North, Balwyn and Deepdene. Doncaster Line could have stops at Balwyn North, Bulleen, Kew, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy, Parkville (Melbourne Metro), Flagstaff and loop. The Airport line could have stops at Airport, Westmeadows, Gladstone Park, Tullamarine, Gowanbrae, Strathmore Heights, Essendon Airport, Airport West, Keilor Park, Keilor East, Avondale Heights, Highpoint and then link on to Flemington Racecourse Line. They could make Flemington Racecourse a frequent service line. There would be no need for a Albion to Jacana line.

Most of these extensions are shown in the PTV network plan, with exception of the Clyde extension.
But it is quite unlikely all the extensions can happen e.g. the Rowville and Doncaster rail will not happen anytime soon. The ones I support should happen ASAP and are the following in order of priority:
Mernda rail (already underway)
Melton Electrification (duplication underway)
Clyde electrification (needs funds and duplication)
Wyndham Vale extension (to be done/provision when the level crossing removed)
Upfield rail link (connecting Vline into the line and duplication, planning underway)
Baxter electrification (needs funding, and includes a better spot for stabling/terminus)
The ones that should be dismissed for now:
Rowville rail (dandenong line congested, first needs the upgrades and Melbourne metro and the quadruplication)
-note that if you use Alamein route needs reinvestigation and longer route and tunnels
Doncaster rail (Metro 2 tunnel needed making it difficult to add onto busy Mernda line.)
Geelong and Wallan electrification (unclear when it is needed, probably needs investigating into the long term benefits into these projects)
I left the Airport rail link on purpose since this one been told by experts not to do it right away, but the public highly supports it. Priority of it is uncertain but there is pressure from federal government for the go ahead. The problem is the route it will take, many agree with the Sunshine-Albion connection (default option). Some like an extension of the Flemington line and rest like a branch line coming of the Broadmeadows line. Also some rail experts want vline to run beyond the airport rail which may change the costs and benefits of such a project.
Many may disagree with me but: It should be done at the same time as the Melton electrification and open between 2022-2026. So that the Melbourne metro tunnel can take the patronage, but if it opens too early it would put too much pressure on the Sunbury line and delay the Melton electrification project.
