I just read of a Holden Torana LJ which has been discovered, covered in dust, in a garage in West Wyalong where it has been sitting undisturbed for years.

The report says that the "86,000 km shown on the odometer is believed to be the correct mileage."Rolling Eyes

Ah, 86,000 km! That is 78,000 trips from my place to the station. Now I understand.

Alternatively, the distance in Titanic propeller shaft lengths would do if that is easier? Laughing

I still want to know how km = mileage.

Do miles = kilometreage?

Surely ????? 'kilometrage' is # number of kilometres covered but it depends if one is an idiot journalist, I suppose.

You can never take anything said as being reliable these days. An incident shown on the TV the other day where someone or other was injured and the statement was made 'I couldn't do nothing' the exact opposite of what was meant - 'I couldn't do anything' or 'I could do nothing'..

Just watched a National Geographic doco which measured height in # storey buildings and Statues of Liberty, volume in VW Beetles, area in the inevitable football pitches and something else was as long as 3 jumbo jets side by side! Rolling Eyes

I was disappointed that there were no examples of power measured in F1 cars and no measurements in double decker busses.

What do they teach young people at school these days?

“Based on 2012-2013 data, on average, diesel cars (lifetime mileage of approximately 208,000 km) are driven a little under 25% further than petrol cars (lifetime mileage of approximately 160,000 km). For LCVs the average lifetime mileage is around 224,000 km, 7% higher than diesel car lifetime mileages and 30% higher than petrol car lifetime mileages; “

Thanks kitchgp; nice pick-up.

It seems that even some august body in Europe has people referring to x number of kilometres as mileage. The last time I looked 1 statute mile was approximately 1.6093 km. Ah; English as she is spoke!

According to https://www.dictionary.com/browse/mileage?s=t, "mileage" is an Americanism. Speaks volumes!
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

According to both Chambers and Collins, mileage has an informal definition "use, benefit or service provided by something" - so by that definition "lifetime mileage of approximately 208,000 km" is perfectly valid.

A new measure will soon be the "Despacito" as a measure for the Earths total human population as the number of Youtube hits will shortly exceed 7B for the first ever Youtube video.

Did you know that some mob in the US (Heinz I think) makes enough Ketchup as to fill the Empire State Building? Don't know in what period as I had 'switched out' by then.Smile

Early in this thread we had some comment about elephants. Now, much more meaningfully, we have the City of Yarra gravely informing us that, "Together we recycle the weight of about 1500 elephants a year!"

(Are you there, YM?)

Yes, I am still around for better or worse.
Given the generally light and bulky nature of recycling, the City of Yarra should measure recycled stuff in either Olympic Swimming Pools or, better and more meaningless still, in MCGs (that's the place where they used to play football).

The country gets dumber by the day.

They should have said "bull elephants"; at least that phrase contributes one appropriate word.

I wonder how many dachshunds per head of population per year that equates to?

Thanks to nine news:-

"A Chinese-born Aussie billionaire has brought enough land to cover the playing surface of the MCG stadium around 2000 times over for development two hours north of Sydney and locals are not happy."

About time the MCG featured again.

Thanks VG that's just what I needed.
It's no wonder that I don't often watch the TV News now that it largely features puerile drivel  from the government, opposition or the AFL.Rolling Eyes Even the weather bird is looking 'tired'.
Being a dinosaur, I measure distance in km rather than time too.

Doco on TV about some Pommie Mob making bicycles last night (20/11/20).

To form the upper frame member they bend it with the weight of 81 White Rhinos. Rolling Eyes How does one convert weight measured in White Rhinos to force. Is there, perhaps, a relationship with the Rhinoceroses used to weigh Melbourne trams not so long ago?

I usually complain about the Yanks with this sort of rubbish but even here in Oz a previously undiscovered Coral Reef the 'size of the Empire State Building' was found the other day. Don't trifle me with anything so mundane or informative as 'area', 'height' or 'clear depth of water'.  I hope that they put something a little more definitive on the Marine Charts.

We are, or are in danger of becoming, a nation of ....wits like the good old USA.

Look on the bright side, at least they haven't confused mass and weight.
