Freight Train Timetables

Is there somewhere that lists all the reguarly scheduled freight trains running through Melbourne suburbs? I know the steel train from Long Island runs (or at least did in 2015) on Thursday nights going through Flinders st. around midnight. Is this the only reguarly scheduled freight train at any time running on the suburban network (or freight only branches like the Newport-Sunshine rail line)?

You mean a Working Time Table? Most definitely. Don't know if it's published though...

Look at the V/Line website and click the Our Company tab, then the Network Access tab, Network Service Plan. Freight & passenger timetables are located there. You might find what you're after, although these do get updated from time to time so worthwhile checking before you plan to see something.

A lot of trial and error to find where they hide the "Access Arrangement". You can search for that or click "Contact Us", then the link at the bottom of "Doing Business with Metro" will take you to:
http://www.metrotrains.com.au/doing-business-with-metro/
If you follow the first link "Access Arrangement" you will see in the contents section G1 is the WTT but note that is missing from the website.

Hello All,

Freight Time Tables are supposedly "commercial in confidence" though how you keep ( for example ) the Steel train a commercial secret is beyond me , bearing in mind its size , noise and frequency , the chances of its running being a secret is pretty remote.

Best wishes and regards, Radioman.

Is pretty good.  For Metro, its mainly the Central one that you'd look at.

Not sure what some are, or where you'd find them out, but a few are probably places

DQR - Deniliquin
TCL - Tocumwal

Others might be able to add to this.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of the secret steel train. You may not be allowed to photograph it. Maybe just a quick sketch... y'know, child art sort of thing.

There is a thread here on steel train times via Spencer Street which is updated most days which could be useful.  The issue with steel trains stems from their use of metro tracks and the timetables linked above are vline train slots and not metro.  The steel train runs almost entirely on metro tracks from West Tower to Long Island via Franskton.

I cannot find in the v/line timetables where the train completes on the freight network can anyone else?
