A66 Being retired?

Stored Locos:

A71, A78, A79 (all PN), B65 (SSR), H2 (RC) H4 (PN), S301, S306 (both PN), T388, T399, T402, X37 (all RC), X39, X41, X42, Y165 (all PN, X41 and X42 soon to be scrapped)
Is S307 still in existence? And while I'm at it, does anyone know if CFCLAs S300 and S311 (stored SG) are pretty much clapped out?

S307 still lingers on stored at EDI Port Augusta, as do V544 and the XRB's. S300 and S311 have recently been purchased by a private individual for preservation, in a similar vein to 42103 and 42105. Body wise they look fine to an untrained eye but mechanically they require a fair amount of work by the sounds of it.

Ah, thanks for that. They seemed to come off regular hire about 2012, but ran a tour in 2015, so hopefully the mechanicals haven't become insurmountable over four years.

If X41 and X42 are going, you have to wonder how much longer poor old S301/306/307 are going to avoid the gas-axe.
ADB
300 & 311 ran a fair bit in 2014/2015 and first half of 2016. They are both shagged mechanically and electrically.

Isn't that exactly what SCT use X47 and X51 for? Smile

Other than those two the only units that have seen ANY use of late are X48 and X50. Both of which have been sporadic at best and when they are it's generally as bankers used when needed.

Apart from X31, none of the BG X's have worked in several months (only 43 and 44 operational), while X's 45, 46 and 52 are stored at Werris Creek.

I assume that "shagged" is a technical term meaning stuffed beyond belief.

XR558 & XR559 are both on S/G. XR558 was first about a month ago and XR559 was released this week.

Thanks for the info. I'd assumed they had been put out to pasture by CFCLA when they got new locos, but it sounds like they were giving up the ghost anyway? Still, someone is having a go at doing them up - though I have to wonder if the "heritage diesel" market isn't becoming a little saturated (maybe it's different in NSW, where they will presumably run).

Any Idea what's going to happen to A78? Left to rot in Bendigo or is it going to get the torch?

Got some news about A78. It's beyond repair with most parts taken out of it already for other Pacific National locomotives.

I've heard BRW/SSR is planning to dispose of A78.

Seems then that only Vlines units will survive the torch

Small update:

I've read that there has been confirmation that the EOI has been underway in regarding A60/62/70 but a final decision hasn't been made due to a much more pressing issue, VicTrack Heritage Rollingstock Review which is being undertaken. Hopefully, soon a final decision will be made soon.

Another small update.

It's that time, the August/September timetable change for VLP. I had a read through every single timetable and it doesn't look like A66 isn't coming back anytime soon for revenue service. Safe to say that A66 is possibly retired for good from revenue service.
  hbedriver Assistant Commissioner

Being retired permanently is different to being retired for good. Sad, but inevitable I guess. Hopefully one of the main line heritage operators will keep it running

If one of our enthusiastic member wasn't allowed to buy it, can steamrail still buy it?

Now if only someone from within PTV or V/Line had a bit of get up and go, they could have A66 refurbished, repainted in its original Orange & Grey V/Line livery and offered for the use of all mainline heritage operators to lead on their tours as a promotional oppurtunity.

I'm sorry, I'm back in reality, of course that wouldn't happen.

Lets all be real, it was probably just gunzel foamy dreams anyhow that it would come back.

ZAP!
Thread resurrection Time!

I have heard mumblings that A66 is due to be reactivated for the December timetable reshuffle. Fact or Gunzel dream?
  hbedriver Assistant Commissioner

Saw the video of the rumblings on Friday. Loco towed to the front of Bendigo fuel point and test started. Reportedly being re-activated; reason still only rumours, but some money being spent, so must be a reason

B66 entered service on the 8th of December, 1952.

If A66 was to be returned to service in December this year, it would be on or around its 68th birthday.

Are V/Line truly that desperate?

Or is something else being planned for it?

Let's all hope that wheezing piece of junk never returns to mainline service.

I'm pretty sure it's destined for heritage use. Maybe they're just blowing some of the soot out.

It ran well when I drove it, including in its last week of active service so i'd be happy to drive it again on the mainline.

DangersDan
It has been rumored to be reactivated for every timetable change since it was 'retired', however they're not going to fill it with fluids if they weren't going to be doing something with it be it heritage or regular service.

Does anyone know who owns it?
