Ahem....  Metro were 'upgrading' their Digital Train Radio base station at Flinders St overnight.  That went well....

3 times in 5 weeks. What a farce. The question that needs to be answered ASAP is the one at the end of the article -

"First and foremost, we need to understand why there can be communications faults throwing the entire network out in the 21st century."

hmm

"There were issues identified with the firewall around our communication system."

What are they using for comms ?

Is is a radio/phone system or is it and IP based solution  ?

Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) is the default.

In emergencies and backup during upgrades it's the mobile phone network iirc...

There are also the complexities of different comms networks talking to each other.

I'm glad that the so-called operators of this so-called communications system have nothing to do with Air Traffic Control.Shocked

Metro uses DTRS, V/Line does not.

This mornings drama occurred on Victrack's equipment (yet again).

Another shocker of a day for V/Line.  Is it to do with the Nth Melb flyover?

Before lunch time today, there were 60min+ delays for incoming trains at SCS from Geelong, Ballarat, Albury, and Seymour lines. Described as a "Rail Equipment Fault".

Was there a service interruption on the Ballarat line yesterday (Monday)?

I was at Ballan just down the street from the station all day; there seemed to be buses coming and going at the station all the time.

From the V/Line website "Due to Metro Tunnel Project and Sunbury Line Upgrade works, coaches will replace Bendigo, Echuca, and Swan Hill line trains for the entire journey from Saturday 13 to Friday 26 August"

Anybody know why they are not running trains to / from Gisborne this time? The works seem to be only going on in Metro Melbourne but all have to suffer for the Greater (Melbourne) good?

Bit early to tell, but V/Line love sticking maintenance into these shutdowns.

Lots of tie renewals on the go. I think Rochester to Echuca will be all done next month, along with much of East Track south of Kyneton.

Thanks Carnot. It would be really nice if they put that info up on the V/Line website instead of just saying it is due to Metro works

But of course I am forgetting about the "need to know" basis that V/Line works from

You assume that whoever writes this stuff not only 'needs to know' but has any understanding of 'what's being told'.

OK, after being fired up by @Carnot this morning it's time for another "whinge"

This morning at Footscray was a shambles. While I was waiting a Waurn Ponds service turned up out of nowhere when the PIDS and the PA were informing pax that the next train was the 9.04 Melton service, mass confusion ensued and I expect some pax had to change at Sunshine for the correct service

V/Line then did it's usual trick of prioritising empty car movements in front of revenue services - the 9.13 Up Bendigo departed Southern Cross on time at 9.06 yet arrived into Footscray 5 minutes late due to those 2 movements. When it arrived there was no announcement, no destination displayed on the train and it was 6 cars instead of the normal 3 so I was as confused as all get out. (and before anyone says it I have fallen victim of trusting the PIDS before at Footscray only to end up on a Geelong service instead of a Bendigo)

We made the path at Albion by the skin of our teeth unlike last Monday when the exact same thing happened but that time we missed our path, crawled all the way to Sunbury making us 10 > 15 minutes late meaning that the train lost another path at Castlemaine and was still sitting in P2 idling away as I walked home through Camp Reserve

As someone posted elsewhere this is a railway seemingly run for the convenience of V/Line and not the travelling public

V/line nearly always seems to play second-fiddle to Metro Trains.  Your whinging is justified.

Until Metro KPI includes the performance* of VLP trains under their guidance** , then 2nd fiddle it will always be.

*   not the 5 min late is "on time" nonsense.
** I started to write "control", but clearly Metrol flunked that a long time ago.

In this case the fault is all V/Lines. Because they give priority to MPT cars on the RRL this delays the revenue services. Not so much of a problem if it is a Ballarat or Geetroit Group train but if it is a Bendigo service and this makes the train late arriving at the interface point then you lose the path

I am sure I heard somewhere that there is a 5 minute rule now (not that Metro pays much attention) and that pretty much gels with what happened on my last 2 trips. Today the driver tore up the rails with a full line speed run into Sunshine. As we slowed for the curve I could see the spark approaching it's platform on a reduced aspect.

Last week we were maybe 30 seconds to a minute later and you can feel it well before Sunshine as the V/Line train slows before the curve - you know then that the service has missed it's slot and you are on the slow boat to Sunbury!

So it had nothing to do with this mornings fatality and the massive chaos that it caused? Or the Overland crew delaying the arrival and departure of trains which funnily enough involved one of the empty movements that you saw?

I don't know, why don't you enlighten us?

And while you are at it.......

Why did the 09.06 Down Bendigo depart SCS on time but arrive into Footscray 5 minutes late due to 2 empty cars movements being whacked in front of it almost causing it to lose it's path?

And what was the excuse for the same thing happening a week ago to the day when it DID lose it's path and arrive into Bendigo, what, 20 minutes late? Longer? Thankfully is alighted (late) at Castlemaine so I don't know the answer

Why did the PIDS and the PA advise passengers for Melton to board the Ghost Waurn Ponds service at Footscray this morning that appeared out of nowhere and .......

Why are so many V/Los running with no destination displayed externally or next stop info displayed internally causing confusion for passengers?

And why are conductors not checking tickets (although this did happen on this morning's service due to what looked like staff training) let alone simply walking the train to act as a deterrent to neer-de-wells and other general pains in the proverbial?

And why are all trains cancelled between Aug 13th and 26th on the Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill lines when according to the V/Line website there are works happening in the Metro area only "Due to Metro Tunnel Project and Sunbury Line Upgrade works, coaches will replace Bendigo, Echuca, and Swan Hill line trains for the entire journey from Saturday 13 to Friday 26 August"

Why are passengers who dare to try to use V/Line to get from A to B treated like second class citizens by V/Line, the government and the DoT?
