New Griffith Service announced by NSW TrainLink

    The NSW TrainLink website is promoting a new train service to Griffith, due to start later in 2019.

    The site says it is to be a mid-week service.

    This follows a long-running local campaign (The Area News, Griffith's local paper, reported on this late last year)

    It is interesting that they are planning to do this (obvious state election considerations aside), as there is a well known shortage of rolling stock, and the weekend service is already frequently cancelled for one reason or another. That said, at least a mid-week service would not be so much at the mercy of the dreaded weekend trackwork.

    The WIN News Facebook page also has the story, as does the mighty Cootamundra Herald.

    If the current schedules for the Griffith and Broken Hill Xplorers remain the same, then the new service could use an Xplorer set on Wednesday/Thursday or Thursday/Friday.

    What they really should do if they're serious about providing an improved rail service to the Riverina, is to re-introduce a daily Riverina Express service, which used to split at Junee I think, with one half travelling to Albury and the other half to Griffith.  It could operate as a midday service from Sydney, working in tandem with the morning and evening Melbourne service, and as a morning return service next day, reuniting at Junee.  With the current shortage of rolling stock, it wouldn't be possible until the new regional trains come on line.

    So why can't I edit my post to fix the error of the quotes. When I previewed that post, the quotes came out as they should be, but when I submitted it ended up as shown.

    Stuffed if I know... I tried to edit it for you and it comes up fine in the preview, but when submitted it shows up wonky. I'll have a look at it when I get back from checking out Newcastle's new toy train...

    Yep.

    Nats held it with less than 5% at the last by-election.  The 2nd place getter there, Helen Dalton, i think is running again, and will give them a decent challenge.

    IMO looks like NSW has got a bit of the Vic train condition - rail is seen as a vote winner....

    You might have something there. I replaced the QUOTE with quote and removed the color tags and it worked. Dunno why...One for the memory banks anyway...

    Sounds good.  Half the time the weekend service is cancelled due to trackwork.  And the conspiracy theorist in me says this is why its run on the weekend.

    I think you have misinterpreted my comment.  When I say it "splits" at Junee, I meant that on a daily basis the actual train splits in two, with one half going to Albury and the other to Griffith, similar to the current Northern Tablelands Explorer pattern.  This would involve 2 x 3 car sets.  Both sets would respectively form the following day's morning return service from Albury and Griffith, reuniting at Junee to Sydney.  This was the previous longstanding pattern for the Riverina Express.  As I've mentioned on another tread, this could be a precedent for a similar Western Line pattern, with the daily morning service from Sydney splitting at Orange, with one half going to Forbes via Parkes and the other to Dubbo.  An afternoon service from Sydney to Dubbo would form the next day's morning return service.

    I think that a 2 car set would be sufficient for Coolamon-Narrandera-Leeton-Griffith.  They're not that big of places, though happy to be corrected with figures of course!

    James.Au they could get away with a single car with the number of passengers that use the service, of course if more frequent services happened then utilisation may increase enough to use 2 cars.

    Sprinters are gauge convertible. But using them North Of The Border would be highly unlikely given that V/Line is using them heavily on interurban services so that the H sets can be retired. By the time they would be available for use they would be well and truly flogged out and the new NSW regional DEMUs would be undergoing testing & commissioning.

    If you only need a single-car DMU on a rail service, just use a coach instead.

    And probably worth adding that they’re most likely gauge convertible in the sense that the VLos are convertible - it’s theoretically possible, but no one’s actually ever prototyped or certified an SG bogie, and as we’ve seen with the VLos, that takes quite a while.

    NSW TrainLink have just announced that the new service starts on Wednesday 18th September.

    Note that the trip ex-Sydney leaves at midday, presumably tacked onto the Canberra service.

    • One additional Griffith mid-week service from Wednesday 18 September. This service will depart Central Station, Sydney on Wednesdays at 12.01pm arriving at Griffith at 8.33pm. Then returning on Thursday, departing from Griffith Station at 7.25am and arriving at Central Station at 4.03pm.

    Endeavours and Xplorers could still be used for certain services but the XPT's are definitely life expired and will be retired.
