Talk by Dr. Temple Grandin in Southbank

I have been told that Dr. Grandin will be appearing at Hamar Hall. She has mentioned before frustration about other people failing to get a picture that is crystal clear to her. I have been argumentative on this site before when others fail to get a picture I think I can clearly see.

Sorry Myrtone, never heard of her before.

I did google and see that she has a background working on autism and animal behaviour.

I can imagine that just discussing these two emotive topics she will have fervent supporters and fervent detractors as is the case with any one that works in those fields. It can be polarising.

Okay, an example of other posters failing to get a mental diagram I could clearly see is many responding to this thread, that was not the first time it happened.

Nonsense. You happen to have prior knowledge about this event; others don't. There will be plenty of other topics here that some of us can see and you can't.

Welcome to the real world.

Nobody else can see what's going on in your head - and why do you presume that you're right anyway? You could be way off track and not know it until someone else points it out.

Don't presume that you know more than everyone else does. Chances are you don't.

That thread also featured numerous examples of people patiently engaging with the discussion in good faith as they attempted to explain that they understood your point but disagreed with it.

Unfortunately, it also featured numerous examples of you rudely throwing it back in their face rather than engaging in the discussion, most notably with your ridiculous 'no comment' responses to certain facts you found inconvenient for your argument. The result of this was that you failed to convince anyone to accept your argument, but you succeeded at giving everyone else a mental picture of you being this forum's version of Nick Kyrgios.

I would recommend that you discuss this with a mentor or psychologist and work on forming a strategy for further development of effective communication tools.

I often note that being an individual with a claim (or ‘vision’ if you prefer) and a disagreeing (or ‘misunderstanding’ if you’re the individual) many is very closely correlated with that individual being wrong.

This is what you’re experiencing.

Individuals sometimes be correcting influence over a mass of wrong, but that takes facts, data and evidence - you didn’t/don’t have that.

I am happy to provide an example of a failure to read your mind and I hope that you try to read mine, as I would be curious what you find in there. I am never sure what i find in there.

As to the Dr I have seen further articles about her work on the ABC online. Very interesting person. I hope you are able to meet her.

Cheers

Many on the spectrum, including Temple, claim that that autistic community is more logical than neurotypicals, which Temple herself has described as fuzzy thinkers, yet here, where most, as far as I know, are not on the spectrum, seem to think at times that I am irrational.

OK.
What is" the spectrum"?
"Many ..."claim . . .  How many and how are they qualified?
"Temple herself has " described as fuzzy thinkers". What percentage of the population is neurotypical, and what percentage is autistic?
It's interesting that you use the words "Temple herself" as though she is an unchallengeable authority.

I have no problem dealing with people who are austistic. I know several of them personally and we get on well together.
I also have no problem dealing with people who are black, disabled, gay or lesbian, comparitively uneducated or with PHD's.

The talk where she says that about verbal thinkers is here, and it isn't just Temple, there are others on the same spectrum who say that about neurotypicals.

Ok, so I have another strike against me

I'm of European descent (My kids are however classified as mixed by US standards)
I'm not financially dependent on the govt
I'm male (shame I know)
I'm married
I'm married to a woman
I'm married to a woman who was born that way

and I'm now a "fuzzy thinker"

Ok seriously now,
yes, we are not all the same and the whole equality movement forgot that part although to be fair they were starting from a low base and I think today we are seeing women allowed to be women in the work place but still treated fairly.

I have no nice for discrimination of anyone by skin tone, but there are issues with some cultures in the work place that its culture, not skin tone and in some cases these individuals need to learn to adapt, not force a whole business to adapt for them.

My youngest has a few extra challenges that we are dealing and was at one stage thought to be "on the spectrum", but likely not. In class he struggles to learn if he has to sit still for long periods. He can but his brain stops listening as its too focused on doing as he's told.

In my school days these kids were often deemed trouble makers and often received the cane as a result. The teachers thought back then the cane made them settled down, but the cane actually provides the physical stimulation their brain needs, but can be achieved by simply being allowed to walk around the room, of have something in their mouth. Many of these kids bombed out of school through being in trouble or simply being bored and often then in trouble with the police later on, my kid is top Maths, but bottom English due to his challenges (long story). Note: From a very young age at school, I believed the use of the cane or strap by an adult on a child is assault and a cowardly act and my views have not changed.

My boy's therapist says who husband has the same issue, he's a A380 pilot with Emirates. He's career choice and achievement is a case study in itself as this is not what they would normally predict, but this guy has found a way to be able to sit still for long periods yet remain focused.

No, it's not my own glitch, I tried to make some text a hyperlink but instead, it links to https://here, this is a problem,  I believe, with the software running the site.

There is a glitch - I haven't been able to work it out and I still get caught out with it, but Myrtone did have the correct URL syntax in his post - I just went to edit it myself and didn't see an issue with it.

It worked for you because you simply cut-and-pasted the URL, you didn't use the URL tags to shorten it at all.

An attempt to use the URL parser in the shortcut bar versus the exact same code in Myrtone's post: here

Here you can see the source code for this post - excluding the below image. One uses the URL inserter above the text-entry box, the other uses the URL BBCode syntax typed manually (though cut-and-pasted from Myrtones post) and I'm buggered if I can see a difference, but neither works...And I dunno why. Confused

'No comment' responses have nothing to do with finding certain facts inconvenient, just so that others understand why I haven't responded to something.

You can just not respond, you don't need to respond with something as perceiveably rude as 'no comment' if you don't have anything to say.

But I have been accused of ignoring others when I don't respond.
