The corona virus COVID-19

I guess Dan is using the argument that they need the tennis to break the rules of quarantine to make people feel normal again... but then forgets that its him doing the oppressing.
don_dunstan
Which proves that you should stop guessing and take note of the news. His stated reason is that the Australian Open must go ahead this year or Melbourne is in danger of losing the event in subsequent years.

Never mind, we're all used to you shooting from the lip where Dan's concerned. I think I'll organise an appeal to buy you a pair of budgerigars - we'll name them Andrews and Keating.

Is blackmail no longer a crime?

If we lose the Tennis we could always use the area to stable suburban trains.

It depends on who Is doing the blackmailing and what's the relationship, or If they are untouchable (don't have to answer to anyone)

Yeah I wouldn't believe a single think that Dan Andrews says - if he said the sky was blue I'd have to look out the window to verify it. As if they're going to take the tennis off them because of the COIVD19 thing when trying to actually hold the event is proving more of a problem than cancelling it.

So all the players are told they can't practice for the next fortnight - what a disaster. I wouldn't be surprised if half of them just go home.

So 1000s of Victorians get locked out while Covid infected tennis brats fly in and then whinge about their hotel quarantine etc.

The Optics are bad.

I am already on record in this forum as saying that the Australian Open should have been cancelled. With the number of "imported" COVID cases, we now have tennis players confined to their rooms for two weeks. With the consequent lack of practice for these players, and possibly more to come, this could turn the tournament into a colossal shambles. Now there's talk about  a "no spectators" Open with a huge loss of admission money. I cannot think of any compelling reason why the tournament should go ahead under such absurd conditions. The Tennis Centre was built specifically to host the Australian Open, and has the best facilities in the country. Andrews' contention that cancelling the Open may lead to loss of the event for next year doesn't wash with me, I'm afraid.
  justapassenger Minister for Railways

A better option than cancellation would have been to announce the tournament would go ahead as a domestic event.

That's what is being done with the Tour Down Under this summer. European professional cycling teams were unwilling to travel and quarantine for the normal season opener here after the 2020 racing season had riders finishing their season as much as three months later than usual, so the 2021 edition has been converted from WorldTour level to a National Road Series event.

The Australian Grand Prix should get the same treatment. Motorsport Australia should stop pretending that it will get held later in the season and start negotiations with the FIA to allow the title to be awarded in a S5000 race at a permanent circuit like Phillip Island or The Bend, which would allow the AGP Corporation to focus on getting the track upgrade done in time for F1 to return in 2022.

Imagine covid happened in the era of McEnroe and Connors? And they were in quarantine for 14 days.

It is the Grand Slam of Asia-Pacific.   Just give it to China now and save all the mucking around in a few years time when they demand it gets shared around.

I have relatives from The Ukraine who were intending to visit last year but of course it didn't happen and it won't happen this year. Impossible hoops to jumP through, but we all take it in our stride, this situation is a mere inconvenience, but ohh these tennis players and their fans. Can't interrupt that now can we! Family reunions can wait, but sport and gambling, they must continue no matter what! Might as well give it to China I'd say, they'd run a tight ship. I imagine it's just a question of money anyway, judging from Australia's attitude to industry, ports, productive land and so on. Offer the dollars and the crafty Aussie drops his dacks and the only question left is 'How far in?'

And the lube is called dollars
  justapassenger Minister for Railways

Maybe it’s time for Victoria (I’m led to believe it is largely state government funded, despite the Melbourne branding everywhere) to drop the tournament completely?

There’s no way that it is an effective advertisement for Victoria, because people watching on TV overseas only see the inside of a generic stadium which could be located anywhere. The only way they can tell it is in Melbourne is the crass behaviour of the ‘fans’ once they are tanked up on the local beer substitute.

At least the GP has the redeeming feature of being held on an outdoor circuit with the city visible in the background.

And the lube is called dollars

In the case of the tennis and GP, it’s also BYO lube.

Isn't this Novak Djokovic that's making demands for private houses with tennis courts and better food and so on, the same Novak Djokovic that held a tennis tournament earlier on in the beginning of the pandemic and went clubbing and he and others during these two events caught covid?

I can see this Tennis tournament being canned at the 11th hour like the Grand Prix was last year. Not wanting to be bitten twice the Grand Prix organisers made the sensible choice to defer (not cancel) the event in the short term for 2021. Having players act like spoiled brats is only going to increase the amount of opposition to it going ahead approaching the planned the date of commencement
