Absolutely disgraceful.  Again we have the removal of rail without public consultation at the helm of the department by Jacinta Allan.  They really do hate rail in the Andrew's Government don't.

In less than 25 years we have seen the complete destruction of the south Gippsland Ail Line despite concerns and the views of business and the community.

What was the line useful for ? Velo's  perhaps.

Who should have been consulted ?

The Andrew's Govt seem to be doing just a wee bit of railway upgrade at the moment, I would have thought.  Rolling Eyes

Don't think the Liberal mob were about to re-open it !

You forgot the Bash Big Jeff for closing it, as well  !!!

The local council (and others) have been advocating for a rail trail for years. It's been on the table for some time, with initial funding first set aside in the 2018/19 council budget. Additional sources, articles, etc; Foster Community Online, South Gippsland Sentinel Times, The Great Southern Star to clarify this. Council publication regarding this (dated February 2019) downloadable here, alternatively here's a snippet:

  • VicTrack has leased the former rail corridor to South Gippsland Shire Council for a period of 18 years for the land to be used as a rail trail between Leongatha and Nyora.
  • The lease does not permit the use of the corridor for a tourist rail.
  • VicTrack has advised that if the land is required for transport purposes in the future,
    the agreement will be revisited.
  • Any suggestion that the existing rail infrastructure is in a good state of repair is
incorrect, as evidenced by the demise of the previous tourist train.
  • Removing the redundant rail infrastructure and constructing a rail trail will not create
a barrier to the return of a passenger rail service in the future.
  • The Great Southern Rail Trail extension is supported by (amongst others):
    • South Gippsland Shire Council • Bass Coast Shire Council
    • Cardinia Shire Council
    • Casey City Council
    • Wellington Shire Council
    • Korumburra Business Association
    • Korumburra Round T able
    • Leongatha Business Group
    • Loch Community Development Association • Destination Gippsland
    • Regional Development Victoria
    • VicTrack

As much as a despise Jeff Kennett at least he made the commitment that the rails from Leongatha to the city would not be removed and they have not been under a coalition government.  Some of the best scenary on the line is in that section.  I am frankly disgusted. The ALP has lost my vote forever.

Stealing from Robert Whithills Twitter now it seems. A smeg 'Article' with as much legitimacy as Your beloved RRA's 'Media releases' in their little facebook page. This is just a predictable beat up from from an biased source.

ALP probably never had it to begin with, considering they had virtually no role to play in this decision. Unless, you're unhappy the state government provided a grant for a rail trail?

It's all very well to go crook about the removal of the Leongatha-Nyora rail, but consider:
  • What was its condition?
  • What was its genuine (non-gunzel) potential?
  • If there's a cry its use for public transport, what is the condition of the rail line from Nyora back towards Melbourne?
  • Given its history, was there any realistic chance of another Tourist Railway having a go, bearing in mind it would need to start from scratch for equipment?
  • Who should have been consulted, in addition to the bodies listed above by Upven?

I applaud the use of the alignment as a rail trail; it gives it a use, rather than having a derelict railway line occupying the space and contributing nothing.

The track condition was very bad (been abandoned for over 4 years In South Gippsland’s climate)

Nyora to Cranbourne (what’s left) Is In horrible condition.

Locals have been extremely fed up about the condition of the land In regards to weeds.

Rail trails have turned out to be a real tourist boon for the areas that have them - witness the former Mansfield line, the Bright line and the Linton rail trail along the Glenelg Highway.

Excellent use for that land, much better than selling it off or leaving it to gather weeds; the only problem is about who builds or maintains it.

Yet the local state member is a national and more than happy to see it go.
Funny that.

Guys, it's dead. Let it go.

Hopefully the materials are going to good homes at other tourist railways and not just the Leongatha tip.

It's probably too far gone for that.

How many tourist railways want rails that have more rust than metal or rotten pieces of sleeper with weeds growing through them?

The rail is actually pretty good and not that rusty. The section between Korumburra and Leongatha is relatively young in tourist railway terms, being 94lb/yd in 82m/270' lengths installed in the 1960s. The wear in most sections is pretty good as well. Compare with the Victorian Goldfields Railway who have only in the last few years been embarking on a rail replacement program to get rid of their 60lb/yd rail that was actually the original rail laid for the line back in 1884.

Considering that no tourist railway in Victoria actually has majority 94lb/yd or heavier rail in their track, the South Gippsland line's rail is actually reasonably valuable.

Everything else (ballast, sleepers, fastenings) on the South Gippy line is pretty much worthless.

Korumburra - Leongatha has 94 LB rails that are probably In ok condition (laid In 1969, 1968 stamp on them)

West of Korumburra the 90 LB rails are very worn In places where there are sharp curves.

Thanks LD and Nightfire both posted at the same time Surprised so some pretty handy rail there, could have used that on the said line, would have been a small step in the right direction.

I realise the Premier is often seen on construction sites in his RM Williams boots, clean Hi-Vis jacket and stack hat, but it's a bit of a stretch to say he's down in south Gippsland single handedly pulling apart the remnants of the old south Gippsland line.

Perhaps the author of this 'piece' is angling for a position on one of the Murdoch rags.

Looks like someones spat the dummy AND thrown their rattle out of the pram Exclamation

At least now many cyclists can enjoy the safety of a ride along the extended rail trail.
