In less than 25 years we have seen the complete destruction of the south Gippsland Ail Line despite concerns and the views of business and the community.
Leongatha to Nyora Rail Line to be dismantled by Daniel Andrews
Absolutely disgraceful. Again we have the removal of rail without public consultation at the helm of the department by Jacinta Allan. They really do hate rail in the Andrew's Government don't.What was the line useful for ? Velo's perhaps.

As much as a despise Jeff Kennett at least he made the commitment that the rails from Leongatha to the city would not be removed and they have not been under a coalition government. Some of the best scenary on the line is in that section. I am frankly disgusted. The ALP has lost my vote forever.Spoken like a true Gunzel. Who to vote for next, The Greens? Robert Whithill? The LNP?

Unless, you're unhappy the state government provided a grant for a rail trail?
It's all very well to go crook about the removal of the Leongatha-Nyora rail, but consider:Rail trails have turned out to be a real tourist boon for the areas that have them - witness the former Mansfield line, the Bright line and the Linton rail trail along the Glenelg Highway.
- What was its condition?
- What was its genuine (non-gunzel) potential?
- If there's a cry its use for public transport, what is the condition of the rail line from Nyora back towards Melbourne?
- Given its history, was there any realistic chance of another Tourist Railway having a go, bearing in mind it would need to start from scratch for equipment?
- Who should have been consulted, in addition to the bodies listed above by Upven?
I applaud the use of the alignment as a rail trail; it gives it a use, rather than having a derelict railway line occupying the space and contributing nothing.

Excellent use for that land, much better than selling it off or leaving it to gather weeds; the only problem is about who builds or maintains it.

Probably plenty of groups would, after all the line from Ararat to Marybourgh is using rails that are 130 yrs old.......Guys, it's dead. Let it go.It's probably too far gone for that.
Hopefully the materials are going to good homes at other tourist railways and not just the Leongatha tip.
How many tourist railways want rails that have more rust than metal or rotten pieces of sleeper with weeds growing through them?
The rail is actually pretty good and not that rusty. The section between Korumburra and Leongatha is relatively young in tourist railway terms, being 94lb/yd in 82m/270' lengths installed in the 1960s. The wear in most sections is pretty good as well. Compare with the Victorian Goldfields Railway who have only in the last few years been embarking on a rail replacement program to get rid of their 60lb/yd rail that was actually the original rail laid for the line back in 1884.Guys, it's dead. Let it go.It's probably too far gone for that.
