There’s no right-of-way through Mount Gambier. The land has been gifted to the council.

Read teh actual report would only re-open to East Mt Gambier Inter modal terminal.

Agreed, but the discussion here was about connecting Millicent.

Not worth the effort to reopen 50km of track through a major town for a limited amount of traffic. Better to build a transfer station on the east side of town for a number of customers unless there are enough tonnes to go around.

Yikes! You won't be able to reopen it. You'll have to build round it.

If I read it correctly, 70,000 tpa is plant output, this is one half decent sized train load a week. The incoming raw materials would boost the tonnage, but still would just sustain an existing railway, probably not encourage alot of investment.

No one is going to pay for 15 - 20 km of new track south of the volcano. Using the Wolseley line, with reversing, is probably still possible but that would be prohibitively expensive as well.

Otherwise there was a crazy number of level crossing through the Mount Gambier Urban Area, all that have been decommissioned and signaling equipment removed.

Here is a little tidbit about the Millicent Canola plant

https://www.graincentral.com/property/squib-buys-viterra-millicent-sites-for-expanding-canola-crush/

“We’re doing 30-40t per day at the moment.
“The intention is to go to 100t a day in seed.”

EDIT - my abysmal mathematical abilities this morning.  Note but ignore rail comment.

So, 365000 tonnes per year.  Thats rail volume, both in and out...
james.au

That's 36500 tonnes per year or one train a month.

Fatty

1 loaded train per month added to a train every 2 days for paper and the intermodal at Mount Gambier, more than most grain lines?
