"The Coalition this month recommitted to building the East West Link, one of its signature infrastructure policies heading into the 2014 election. Ms Staley argues it remains a necessary project"

It will be interesting to see if the Opposition's strategy under 'charismatic' Michael O'Brien is a winner.

Is this surplus going to be like the one the Federal Liberal / Nationals Coalition have been promising us for the last seven years?

Don’t stress too much. The moderates in Victoria could accept Ted Bailleau when he was up against the non-Labour-like John Brumby, but his colleagues could not, so got rid of him and proceeded to lose the next election. The liberal Liberals are in a minority, Independents have as much chance in many seats. I doubt the Government will be changing next election, although the Feral-Sun may do It’s best to prove me wrong.

People like Ted Bailleau or John Pesuto could have made the Liberal brand less unpleasant, however the remnants do not inspire. Maybe they’ve been professional politicians too long, a good clean out next election might do them good.

The Feral-Sun has tried...and utterly failed thrice to stop Dan's election. Despite the Murdoch media, Dan has actually increased his majority at each successive poll.

We know this will not continue in perpetuity and I welcome a strong Opposition for the democracy we enjoy. But the religious, anti-gay, loony right have taken over that party and decent people like Baillieu and Pesutto aren't an official part of the Libs at this time.
All the properties acquired for the East-West link have been re-sold so that grand scheme will need to be re-launched in its entirety if it ever gets support again.

The easiest thing in the world of politics is for the Opposition to promise pie in the sky. The procedure then follows one of two well-trodden paths:-
(a) The government is returned.
(b) The opposition wins and, within a month, gravely announces that the State's finances are much more of a mess than was first thought, and the strategy will have to be altered/delayed/abandoned.

Easily achievable. They have had plenty of practice.

Simply build nothing, cut maintenance, slash and burn what already exists or is under way.

Seems that we in Victoria have the two extremes; profligate waste or stagnation/do nothing.

Well said YM, not that great of a choice is it!

It doesn't really matter what the Victorian Libs promise, the only way they could get in is by promising a large sum of $$$ to each and every voter and I think that might go against their ethos let alone their plan for getting us back into surplus Laughing

I'll be voting Independent (again) at the next election(s*). I swore many years ago that I would never vote for anything other than a party (originally Labour then Democrats) as one person can't get any real stuff done. Funny how your mindset changes over the years, I don't like what any of the majors are selling these days and haven't voted for a major or semi-major party for years now.

* as in Federal and State

Well the fed libs would have had a surplus if it wasn't for Covid. This one is going to be a little harder to get out of.

Referring to BrendanGolding’s comment about Independent Members;

Shepparton voted an Independent in instead of the Nationals; she promised another train service daily and got it, then got re-elected promising another service, which she got.

Bairnsdale got their train back after an Independent got elected (he also got water back into the Snowy River); he then lost to the Nationals, and the area is again a backwater.

It seems that if you want something done, vote Independent; whichever Party wins Government tends to splash cash into that electorate, either to buy their way back, or to reward the voters for not voting the other mob in.

What good is a surplus going to do for us?

Victoria has a booming population with infrastructure that is still decades behind our needs. Currently we have record low interest rates & an excellent credit rating. This is the time to continue building for our future, not the time to start stashing cash in the mattress.
