Does anyone know when the Whittlesea Line opened and closed?
Was this line ever electrified?

I have a book in my other office on that line.  I will be there next week and will look it up for you and post back.

Whittlesea line was opened during the "octopus" expansion of the late 1880s and was closed about 1962. The electrified section to Keon Park remained open, this service was extended to Lalor then Epping where it has remained for 25 or more years despite urban growth further along.

1959. Lalor was where it was closed back to, although this was an extension of electric trains. Epping extension in 1964. Rails are in place in some places so when South Morang is done I'm sure they'll find a few.

This parallels Upfield experience, basically a crappy line with RM falling apart and closed in 1956, but by 1966 reopened, electrified, and a far better service than it had ever had.

I can remember  the Lalor extension being mentioned in the news & I am sure it was after the line closure. I rode my bicycle to Epping in 1964 I think & there was just an ordinary abandoned railway station in a semi rural town. There was no sign of pending electrification or any indication then that the line there would not end up like the rest of the Whittlesea line. Electrification came closer to 1970 IIRC.

Nope.  Riccardo's facts seem pretty right to me.
