Can i buy a student ticket from Hurstville to Star City travelling via rail and light rail return? the fare calculator doesn't seem to give me student tickets.

You will qualify for a student concession fare from Hurstville to Central, but not from Central to Star City.

Also can this be done via the ticket machines or do i have to go to the counter?

You should be able to purchase the TramLink ticket from a ticket machine.

You have the alternative choice, however, of taking the 443 from QVB to Star City. Take a train from Hurstville to Town Hall, then alight and exit through QVB onto York St. Look for Stand B, and hop on the 443 to Star City. Student concession fares are available upon presenting your student card with concession sticker, and the concession fare is $1.10. (Or, go to a newsagent and buy a "MyBus 1 Concession Single". Regurgitate the exact string.)

Enjoy your party, and rest assured the tram and buses operate in both directions so you'll be able to go home. If you can still remember where it is, anyway.
