Apropos the "Lowbrown Medal", for many years Hawthorn had ( and may still have ) it's own award called the Damlow Medal, which went to the player with the most points for idiocy etc. A old friend of mine played in Hawthorn's 1961 Premiership, and told me of some the ways points were gained. For example, full forward John Peck, running toward an open goal with the siren about to blow, and three points needed for a win, decided to get closer before kicking at goal. He attempted to bounce the ball on the run, lost it, and failed to recover, thereby not getting his kick, and Hawthorn lost by two points. From memory, Peck got 45 points in the Damlow Medal for that effort. There were other examples which have no place on a family program!
As for the Brownlow Medal presentation itself, Channel 7 deserves some form of bizarre award for producing a 4 hour program about something which could be done in 40 minutes.
