So you really think people will vote in the ALP instead? The party that practically invented political knifings of sitting PMs? Goes right back to Hawke being stabbed by Keating.
By my count, its only 3-2 in favour of the ALP at present. And at least one failed attempt on either side too.

Keating - Hawke (1st failed, second succeeded)
    Gillard - Rudd
    Rudd - Gillard

Turnbull - Abbott (1st failed, second succeeded)
Dutton of course failed twice, as Morrison jumped over him in his second attempt.

The knives have seen more use in the back of Opposition leaders.

It has been going on for much longer than that. Hawke did over Bill Hayden before going on to win the "drover's dog" election. Billy McMahon challenged John Gorton twice, first unsuccessfully then ultimately winning the leadership of the Libs in 1971 and then losing to Whitlam in 72.

Pig Iron Bob Menzies was ousted while in office the first time around in the UAP government, in 1941 when he returned from OS he found he had lost support of the party and resigned, going on to create the Liberal Party, winning government and serving as PM fron 1949 to 1966

And further back that that Aus politics was really messy with characters like Billy Hughes "the little digger" who represented six political parties during his career, leading five, outlasting four, and being expelled from three. He brought down the Bruce government in 1928 when he and his supporters in the coalition crossed the floor on a confidence motion.

Interestingly Hughes started his political career in the ALP and ended up in the UAP where he was deposed as leader by none other than Robert Menzies in 1939! And they talk about class traitors these days, maybe Malcolm should fulfill his destiny, join the Labor Party and lead them into a golden decade in office! Or not.

Things might be ugly ATM but it's not a new phenomenon and it's not a patch on Italian politics. We were just fortunate enough to have some fairly stable years up until 2009.
