1) Quite a few of the "named" services lost their names, including likes of "The Fish" (Sydney - Mt. Victoria), "The Chips" (which I believe was Sydney - Valley Heights if I'm not mistaken). Why they lost their names? No idea, I suppose things just became more formalized with the timetables and they didn't really bother to keep the names
2) From what I've read on various other sites, it may be because they are trying to build up more V sets either to 8 car sets instead of just 4 and perhaps run additional trains on the Blue mountains Line, particularly beyond Springwood where only the V sets can run due to clearance/loading gauge issues. There is a high degree of tourism to this region. I've seen some people also say they are trying to use Oscars more due to the fact that the V sets now have more reliability issues due to their age.
3) It's been stated that the first NIF trains are supposed to enter service in late 2019, however, as these things go, for all we know it could get pushed into 2020. A 4 car set has been photographed hauled by a diesel locomotive in South Korea and more than likely, this set will probably be delivered in the next few months for testing on the network. This may mirror what happened with the 4 car Waratah test train which ultimately paved the way for the complete 8 car sets.
Glad you are enjoying the posts. I've updated some of the information on the car listings as well as the set numbers they currently belong to that I've been able to glean from other postings.

I could have posted this under 'questions I have always been afraid to ask....., but here goes:1. I loved hearing about the last Newcastle Flyer service to Newcastle in 2014.
But, my question is: why did the name disappear from timetables? was it deliberate? an oversight? did anyone really notice in officialdom?2. Why are no V sets rostered on the Newcastle run on weekends? When I go up there on the weekend I see lots of V sets stabled at Gosford and Broadmeadow, but they are not in use. The glorified suburban Oscars are used instead. Why?
I probably missed some thread somewhere about this, I cannot recall where. I wonder if TrainLink ever tried to publicly justify the decision?3. Any updates on V set replacement? the year 2019 is ticking along, and i have heard nothing for a long while about the progress (or otherwise) of the replacement train (which I thought was due this year.....and I would have thought that testing at least would be imminent).
I never thought I would be getting so nostalgic about V sets; but here I am, following each and every post!
best wishes to you all.
Craig
