Victoria, 3-10 to 8-10-2004
After catching the Vermonter in White River Junction, we headed straight to the beach… and I mean straight there. We were too late to catch AYPO, the northbound freight, anyway…
After dinner, we headed to the Wells Transportation Center for the 7 PM meet. This is the only time in the day when a pair of Amtrak Downeasters meet at the siding in Wells. Sadly we had missed the southbound freight, POAY, while at the beach, and the other two freights, POED and EDPO had already gone by early in the morning.
Amtrak 697 pulled in a couple of minutes late, not bad considering the estimate of 10 minutes late. After a slight incident which I will not share here to protect the engineer, they pulled out of the station and headed north.
Something I noticed is that neither train had an ex-F40 “cabbage car”. P42s were on both ends… Next up was Amtrak 698, which held on the siding just east (north) of the station.
As I walked to the other end of the station, the engineer rolled down the window and shouted “there’s a crossing down there (points west) that you can get us going full speed!”. I did check out that crossing earlier in the day, but we didn’t have time to go down there to properly shoot trains on this trip. Next time…
We then headed north to Waterville, where I would break my scanner, run into Walmart for a soldering iron, and fix it on the bathroom counter in the hotel… not the best night I’ve ever had. -Harrison
