DB Regio selected for Rhein-Neckar operating contract
Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Regio has signed a €220m contract with Stadler to procure 18 double-deck trains for operations on the east electrical network.
The contract follows the commissioning of DB Regio as the operator of the network to the north-east of Hamburg.
Under the terms of the contract, Stadler will deliver 18 KISS-variant vehicles for suburban operations, which are expected to begin from 2022.
Stadler Germany CEO Jure Mikolčić said: “We are delighted with this order from the Schleswig-Holstein region because it means we can continue our successful working relationship with Deutsche Bahn.
“This contract confirms that railway companies need modern, reliable and smooth-running double-decker vehicles that can transport a high number of passengers easily and quickly.”
The KISS double-decker trains comprise two railcars and two central cars. Each double-decker car has 405 seats, of which 38 are in first class.
The vehicles are equipped with Wi-Fi, power sockets and CCTV systems. Additionally, the KISS trains feature a modern passenger information system and electronic reservation capabilities.
Overall, each rail car can accommodate 880 passengers. Up to three railcars can be connected together, allowing the train to transport 2,640 passengers per journey.
The lower level of the double-decker trains are spacious and can store wheelchairs, prams and bicycles. The section also includes wheelchair-accessible toilets.
The trains have eight entrances and are equipped with a gap bridge instead of steps to facilitate swift access. They are also optimised to fit a platform height of 76cm.
Recently, Stadler won another contract to deliver eight diesel multiple unit trains to US-based transport agency Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART).
