Network Rail welcomes new chief executive, Andrew Haines OBE
Andrew joins Network Rail from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which oversees all aspects of civil aviation in the UK, where he served as chief executive.
Network Rail announced his appointment in May following a highly competitive process. Andrew takes the reins from Mark Carne, who joined Network Rail in January 2014.
His arrival comes ahead of the company's next five-year regulatory control period, which begins in April 2019.
Andrew, who praised Network Rail’s achievements under Mark’s leadership, including its improved safety performance, said: “I first joined the railway because I wanted to do a job that mattered; a job that allowed me to get stuck in, work alongside great people and feel I’d contributed to keeping the country running.”
He added: “The sheer quality and dedication of so many fantastic people was one of the real attractions for me of working at Network Rail.”
Sir Peter Hendy CBE, chair of Network Rail, said at the time of Andrew's appointment: “Andrew’s broad experience of rail and transport, and his reputation for relentless delivery and improvement makes him the ideal candidate to carry on with the transformation of Network Rail that has been led by Mark Carne.
“Andrew will drive delivery of the railway improvements set out in the strategic business plan for 2019/2024, ensuring Network Rail’s continuing focus on safety, performance and cost effectiveness, and thus delivering a better experience for the millions of passengers who travel every day on our railways.”
Andrew Haines OBE was appointed as a Board Member and Chief Executive of the CAA in August 2009 and for a further 5 years in August 2012. Prior to this he had a wide-ranging career in the rail industry, as Managing Director of South West Trains, and then as Managing Director of the Rail Division for First Group plc. Andrew received the OBE in 2016, for services to transport.
