The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Jeff Knueppel, the general manager of SEPTA, is choosing not to renew his contract, and will be leaving at the end of 2019. Under Knueppel’s leadership, SEPTA, the nation’s sixth-largest transit system, was an early adopter of a safety system required by federal law.
Knueppel has worked for SEPTA for 32 years and has been the general manager since 2015. Highlights of his time in the GM’s chair include the visit of Pope Francis in 2015, along with Philadelphia’s hosting of the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Knueppel is a civil engineer, and was not hesitant to get in the weeds of analyzing and solving problems on the railroad. He also served as an effective spokesperson and leader after any service problems, large or small.
A candidate for Knueppel’s replacement is Pennsylvania’s transportation secretary, Leslie S. Richards. Richards has previously served on SEPTA’s board.
