While train travel is considered a particularly safe form of mass transport, Australia has had it's share of significant rail accidents.
The aftermath of the Granville disaster was broadcast across the country and remains the nation's worst rail crash but incidents date back to the earliest years of rail travel with the 1908 Sunshine disaster the worst example prior to Granville.
