Transport for New South Wales (NSW) invited expressions of interest (EoI) to construct a digital signalling test facility in western Sydney, Australia.
The Digital Systems Facility will be built at the Rail Technology Campus at Chullora to integrate future technologies across the train network in Sydney.
This move is part of the A$831m project to renovate the Sydney Trains network. The centre will test new technology without disturbing the rail operations.
The facility will install modern and intelligent systems to replace legacy signalling and train control technologies.
Transport for NSW spokesperson said: “This technology is a key enabler towards achieving the goals of Future Transport 2056, delivering increased capacity and significant performance, cost and safety benefits for both passenger and freight services.”
The facility is a part of the ‘More Trains, More Services’ programme by Transport for NSW.
The scope of work under the Digital Systems Program includes the replacement of trackside signalling equipment with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 technology.
ETCS technology will offer consistent and quicker travel times.
A Traffic Management System will be installed for better incident management and service regulation in the rail network.
Main features of Digital Systems technology will be showcased at the facility and offer learning and development areas for staff.
The facility is expected to open by the end of 2021.
