Established in 1856, Victorian Railways (VR) was the State Government entity which owned and operated the railways in Victoria until corporatisation in the early 1980s. They established railways to fledgling communities in far-flung parts of the state and created major manufacturing facilities in Newport.
Victorian Railways were superseded by Vicrail in the early 1980s and later V/Line in the mid 1980s.
VicTrack is dedicated to preserving Victoria’s rail and tram heritage for future generations. Since 2001, VicTrack has worked with Heritage Victoria to conduct an annual program of restoring significant historic railway buildings and other infrastructure throughout Victoria.
